    • Thousands play dangerous game, survey finds

Posted by Shemuses from Globe and Mail

A new survey says some 79,000 Ontario students are also playing a lethal "choking game" that has killed at least 82 children in the United States. The survey by the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health found about 7 per cent of children in Grades 7 to 12 have been choked on purpose. The so-called "choking game" involves being throttled to the point of almost passing out and induces a brief high. Doctors at the centre say the game isn't new but shows that Ontario students are hurting themselves intentionally.

    • Doctors to visit poorest Vancouver residents to free up hospital beds

      Posted by Shemuses from CBC

In a bid to reduce the number of hospital beds being taken up by the homeless and drug addicts in Vancouver, doctors will soon be making house-calls to those who live in single room occupancy (SRO) hotels in the Downtown Eastside. Many residents of the Downtown Eastside are seriously ill, often the result of drug use and hard living on the streets, said Lorna House, the director of mental health for the Vancouver Coastal Health Authority. By the time they get to a hospital, she said, they often need long-term care.

    • Operators go to court to protect injection site

Posted by Shemuses from Globe and Mail

With just two months to go before its doors may be closed by the Conservative government, operators of North America's only supervised injection site for users of illegal drugs have gone to court to stay open. The facility saves lives, reduces harm to drug addicts and increases their motivation to seek treatment, lawyers argued in B.C. Supreme Court yesterday. As a result, they said, federal drug laws against possession of heroin and cocaine should not apply there. "The criminal approach leads to death. Harm reduction leads to life," said John Conroy, representing the Vancouver Area Network of Drug Users.

    • Medical marijuana patients denied a spot on transplant list

Posted by Jeff from Seattle Times

When dying patients need a transplant, should it be held against them if they've used dope with a doctor's blessing? "Most transplant centers struggle with issues of how to deal with people who are known to use marijuana, whether or not it's with a doctor's prescription," said Dr. Robert Sade, director of the Institute of Human Values in Health Care at the Medical University of South Carolina. "Marijuana, unlike alcohol, has no direct effect on the liver. It is however a concern ... in that it's a potential indicator of an addictive personality."

      The world’s food insecurity

Posted by Shemuses from Open Democracy

The severity of today's world food crisis resembles that of the early 1970s. But the role of the financial sector and of global climate change are key differences, says Paul Rogers. The food crisis is now affecting many countries across the world. Millions of people in dozens of countries are unable to afford the food they need, and malnutrition is on the rise. From Egypt to Indonesia, Haiti to Thailand, and across many countries in sub-Saharan Africa, increasingly vociferous public protests over food prices or shortages have exploded; some governments even fear for their survival.

Interesting to find out if the anchovies are a biproduct of some other product – maybe cheaper to reuse it rather than dispose of it and dupe the public into believeing it is for their benfit.

Deported in Coma, Saved Back in U.S.

I see no way this will ever be fixed as long as the world is driven by  the desire to amass money.. I do not say this in any altruistic sense,  just logic. This may be the best system we’ve got at the moment, but it is by no means a good one.

While I am by far (for the moment) much better off than these folks, I am by no means immune to perhaps having to choose between living and dying for myself and or a family member because of monetary constraints at some point.

Survey: Half of US doctors use placebo treatments

I am not surprise that doctors give patients placebo because most patients were not physically sick. Most are mentally sick because of their imagination and some wanted attention.

These doctors usually give these patients vitamin C or a multi-vitamin which will not worsen their condition. But will help they psychologically.

    Great post. Keep them coming.

Eco-Friendly Sex Toys: Why Your Pink Parts Should Go Green

I consider myself a sex toy junkie, and have been using sex toys for the past 10 years. I can’t stress enough the importance of Eco-sex toys or so called Green Sex Toys. They are safe for you and the environment. Many sex toy manufacturers have completely switched into producing only sex toys that are phthalate-free, but I believe that everyone should impose on manufacturers and demand that sex toys are always "Green".
