    • Firms Are Asked to Stop One-Drug Malaria Therapy

Posted by Billbar from Washington Post

WHO called on 17 pharmaceutical companies yesterday to stop selling the miracle drug artemisinin as a stand-alone therapy for malaria, saying the practice could leave the world with no effective weapon against the deadly infection within a decade. This comes after two decades during which the emergence of drug-resistant strains of the malaria parasite has worsened the global toll of the tropical disease.

    • One million people, one medical gamble

      Posted by Billbar from Codylyonblogolater.blogspot

The British project, called Biobank, aims to revolutionise medical research by gathering information that will allow scientists to study in unprecedented depth how our genes and environment interact over the years to cause disease. But who should own our medical details and have access to them?

    • Drug Addled

      Posted by Billbar from Slate

Bush's prescription drug plan, which went into effect on Jan. 1, offers so many baffling options that only 1 million of 21 million eligible Medicare beneficiaries have signed up for it on their own. Many of these early adopters, along with millions of impoverished Medicaid recipients transferred into the new system automatically, have been unable to obtain their prescriptions at the promised discounted price.

I agree completley. The health care system should be changed.

Global warming may increase kidney stones: researchers

Oh please, you have got to be kidding. Yes, people may have this issue if they move to, say, the Sahara, otherwise this is just silly. The world warms on about a 50 or so year cycle (did up old media reports) and the media goes nuts. It also goes nuts in the cooling cycles which are also about 50 or so years.

So I think the headline puts the article into the silly bin.

HHS Moves to Define Contraception as Abortion

The media keeps referring to Bush as a ‘Lame Duck President’, but this is just the sort of damage to freedom that people can expect from the Bush/Cheney White House before a new president is sworn into office in January.  They are expecting us to let down our guard.

HHS Moves to Define Contraception as Abortion

I think we can expect an acceleration of unfathomable, unreasonable, unstomachable executive orders and administrative rulings in the final days of the Bush administration.

The Democratic Congress, elected to a majority in ‘06 to end the Iraq war, has taken a huge bet in not impeaching and not confronting Bush and the GOP agenda in order to keep approval numbers low enough for a sweep in November. It’s a huge doubling down – gambling with nothing less than our democracy.

New Yorkers try to swallow calorie sticker shock

America has an obesity problem, but it’s in part because we’re surrounded by sugary carbs. This law is a great step towards creating awareness and driving demand towards leaner options (like the one mentioned anecdotally in the article – though I don’t recommend the steak).
