    • Operators go to court to protect injection site

Posted by Shemuses from Globe and Mail

With just two months to go before its doors may be closed by the Conservative government, operators of North America's only supervised injection site for users of illegal drugs have gone to court to stay open. The facility saves lives, reduces harm to drug addicts and increases their motivation to seek treatment, lawyers argued in B.C. Supreme Court yesterday. As a result, they said, federal drug laws against possession of heroin and cocaine should not apply there. "The criminal approach leads to death. Harm reduction leads to life," said John Conroy, representing the Vancouver Area Network of Drug Users.

    • Medical marijuana patients denied a spot on transplant list

Posted by Jeff from Seattle Times

When dying patients need a transplant, should it be held against them if they've used dope with a doctor's blessing? "Most transplant centers struggle with issues of how to deal with people who are known to use marijuana, whether or not it's with a doctor's prescription," said Dr. Robert Sade, director of the Institute of Human Values in Health Care at the Medical University of South Carolina. "Marijuana, unlike alcohol, has no direct effect on the liver. It is however a concern ... in that it's a potential indicator of an addictive personality."

      The world’s food insecurity

Posted by Shemuses from Open Democracy

The severity of today's world food crisis resembles that of the early 1970s. But the role of the financial sector and of global climate change are key differences, says Paul Rogers. The food crisis is now affecting many countries across the world. Millions of people in dozens of countries are unable to afford the food they need, and malnutrition is on the rise. From Egypt to Indonesia, Haiti to Thailand, and across many countries in sub-Saharan Africa, increasingly vociferous public protests over food prices or shortages have exploded; some governments even fear for their survival.

      Breast cancer's booze connection

Posted by Shemuses from Globe and Mail

Yet that one glass of wine - the pleasure of it, the taste of it and, most of all, the beloved ritual of it - is now under siege. The release last week of startling research on the link between drinking alcohol and getting breast cancer has sparked new fears in many women. According to the study conducted by the U.S. National Cancer Institute, the headlines blared, women who consumed less than one drink a day had a 7-per-cent increase in their risk of developing certain very common estrogen-fuelled breast cancers. Related Articles From the archives * Alcohol may boost breast cancer risk The Globe and Mail Take one or two drinks a day and your chances of getting these tumours increase 32 per cent, and three or more drinks boosts your risk 51 per cent.

I agree completley. The health care system should be changed.

Global warming may increase kidney stones: researchers

Oh please, you have got to be kidding. Yes, people may have this issue if they move to, say, the Sahara, otherwise this is just silly. The world warms on about a 50 or so year cycle (did up old media reports) and the media goes nuts. It also goes nuts in the cooling cycles which are also about 50 or so years.

So I think the headline puts the article into the silly bin.

HHS Moves to Define Contraception as Abortion

The media keeps referring to Bush as a ‘Lame Duck President’, but this is just the sort of damage to freedom that people can expect from the Bush/Cheney White House before a new president is sworn into office in January.  They are expecting us to let down our guard.

HHS Moves to Define Contraception as Abortion

I think we can expect an acceleration of unfathomable, unreasonable, unstomachable executive orders and administrative rulings in the final days of the Bush administration.

The Democratic Congress, elected to a majority in ‘06 to end the Iraq war, has taken a huge bet in not impeaching and not confronting Bush and the GOP agenda in order to keep approval numbers low enough for a sweep in November. It’s a huge doubling down – gambling with nothing less than our democracy.

New Yorkers try to swallow calorie sticker shock

America has an obesity problem, but it’s in part because we’re surrounded by sugary carbs. This law is a great step towards creating awareness and driving demand towards leaner options (like the one mentioned anecdotally in the article – though I don’t recommend the steak).
