Posted by Shemuses from New York Times

PARIS, Dec. 19 — A Libyan court on Tuesday again sentenced five Bulgarian nurses and a Palestinian doctor to be shot by a firing squad for deliberately infecting more than 400 children with H.I.V., more than 50 of whom have died. The decision complicates Libya’s efforts to improve relations with the West.

Posted by Justonehumbletruthseeker from Reuters UK

Did you know that families in India "often disown their HIV-positive family members"? Or that children with AIDS could be kicked out of schools and/or orphanages? Or that people may be denied housing by landlords if they have AIDS?

    • Gates Foundation to Finance Search for H.I.V. Vaccine

Posted by Billbar from New York Times

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation awarded more than a quarter of a billion dollars today to researchers in 19 countries to speed the lagging development of an H.I.V. vaccine. They represent a significant shift in emphasis, to large-scale collaborative projects instead of small teams of researchers working independently.

HIV patients get first once-a-day pill

      Posted by Jeff from MSNBC

Shouldn't the Bush administration promote condom usage given how expensive the treatment for HIV is? The wholesale price of the new pill will be $1,150 for a 30-day supply, or the same as for Truvada and Sustiva when purchased separately.

Washington plans HIV tests for all residents aged 14 to 84

Posted by j1o2n3a4s5 from Guardian UK

“About one in 50 Washington residents are believed to be infected.”_ One in 50? That seems like a wild guess to me, I suppose the only way they will prove this figure is to have their plan realised and indeed test every citizen between the ages of 14 and 84. The social impact could be severe though. Will the city put enough money into caring for the believed 1/50th of the city’s population who have HIV? There have been promises given but with this government we have seen that promises mean nothing
