      My friend Tom was persistent in his requests for me to join his writers group. He told me to just come once, write about something, or not. “You can do whatever you want,” my cheerful friend said, “the group is very supportive. That’s the whole point of getting together,” he would say somewhat paternalistically, “to support each other.” When I finally run out of excuses I commit to the next Tuesday night meeting.
