Tractor clearing brush kills man, sparking policy review

Posted by Jeff from Seattle Post-Intelligencer

Seattle isn't dealing with its homeless problem. Running over them with tractor mowers isn't going to help either. Autopsy results released Tuesday revealed that Palmer, 62, was alive when the S2 Spyder tractor's 18-foot arm with a rotary blade struck him in the head just before noon.

    • Four friends charged in beating death of homeless man in Miami

Posted by Billbar from Sun Sentinel

Angry over a homeless man's catcall, four friends went on a "feeding frenzy," police said, beating the elderly man to death with a metal chair, a steel rebar, a rock and a wooden stick. Two men accused in Saturday's attack are the sons of Christian clergymen. All four have been charged with second-degree murder. "This was pure bloodlust," said Miami police spokesman Lt. Bill Schwartz. "There was no reason for this."

    • Attacks on homeless up, activists say

Posted by Billbar from Seattle Post-Intelligencer

Tara Cole, who had been living on the streets of Nashville for more than three years, spent her last night alive sleeping on a boat ramp along the Cumberland River. She was killed in the early hours of Aug. 11, when two unknown males pushed her into the river, according to witnesses. Other homeless people couldn't save her. "She was one person, but it terrorized the whole homeless population," said Howard Allen, a homeless man who has helped organize a nightly vigil for Cole. Authorities said the fatal attack was unprovoked, and homeless advocates say such violence is on the rise across the nation. Often the attackers are teenagers or young adults who are more affluent than their victims, experts say.

    • Las Vegas marshals ticket 7, arrest 3 amid homeless protests

Posted by Billbar from Las Vegas Sun

Three people were arrested and seven were issued summonses at two parks, city officials said, including a reporter and a cameraman ticketed for trespassing while covering the protest for KLAS-TV, the CBS affiliate in Las Vegas. "The idea was to go out there and show the mayor this ordinance makes no sense whatsoever," said Beth Monk, 24, a traffic reporter and radio comedy team sidekick who has engaged in publicity stunts including mud wrestling on the job.

Las Vegas Makes It Illegal to Feed Homeless in Parks

Posted by Billbar from New York Times

“The government here doesn’t care about anybody,” said one homeless woman, Linda Norman, 55, taking a bottle of water and already perspiring in morning heat approaching 100 degrees at Huntridge Circle Park, a manicured, well-watered three-acre patch of green in a residential area near downtown. “We just want to eat.”

Nickels may be a community leading green mayor but he’s also a developer’s mayor and paul allen’s mayor and a do-little mayor on transit.

I was motivated to write to May Nickels in response to this.  Here’s what I wrote to him:

"I do not believe $1115 in rent a month is "Affordable housing."

The fact that there are many well to do business people in Seattle should not put a shadow over the Childcare professionals, construction workers, educators, and Administrative Assistants who make less than 40K a year.  If they had to pay $1115 a month it would most certainly be well over 30% of their income.

Are you trying to turn Seattle into an elitist community, or what?"

If you feel the same way, you should email important officials too.

I always heard that rent or housing shoud be 25% of your salary. That $1115 a month works out to a salary of $53520 a year. They must be rich in Seattle if low income singles (because it’s a studio apartment) are making over $53000 a year. Based on a 40 hour week that works out to $25.48/hour.

I live on Social Security only. My income is less than $900 a month. HUD gives we senior citizens a place to live at 30% of income after medical expenses. Try it sometime. Going to the bathroom on a regular basis is our form of joy.
