Vancouver rally points to housing crisis

      Posted by Shemuses from CBC

Advocates called for a national housing policy during a rally and federal all-candidates meeting on housing and poverty in Vancouver Saturday. The event was part of a provincewide "Stand for housing" campaign, in which advocates in communities throughout B.C. staged protests to call attention to what they say is a housing crisis in Canada.

      Foreclosure Alley

      Posted by Shemuses

For the past few years, the Inland Empire in Riverside County has been one of the fastest growing counties in the state - home to a major housing boom. But now the Inland Empire is pretty much the poster child for the foreclosure crisis. In the newer developments, house after house sits vacant - either up for auction, for sale by a bank or going for what's called a "short sale" which is when the owner owes more than the house is worth. SoCal Connected tracked down some surreal sights associated with the crisis - a company that specializes in removing whatever people leave behind in their foreclosed homes. • Activists offer plan to quickly house Downtown Eastside's homeless

Posted by Shemuses from The Tyee

The most visible tip of British Columbia's vast homeless problem could be solved almost overnight if governments were to pressure private owners to reopen more than 486 vacant rooms and apartments in Vancouver's rough-and-tumble Downtown Eastside. "Last week, we went out and surveyed all of the hotel rooms in the Downtown Eastside, and we found a staggering 486 empty rooms and apartment units in this neighbourhood," said activist Wendy Pedersen of the Carnegie Community Action Project.

Local UW students come clean with traveling shower for homeless

Posted by Jeff from Seattle Times

Efforts like the "traveling shower" designed and built by University of Washington architecture graduate students, on display at the Sustainable Ballard Festival Saturday, are a step in the right direction, he said. "I don't consider anything a drop in the bucket," he said. "I actually find it refreshing and creative that groups are trying to find solutions like that."

150 tents for homeless spring up on industrial land owned by Seattle

Posted by Jeff from Seattle Times

At the entrance of the makeshift grassy camp near West Marginal Way Southwest and Highland Park Way Southwest, an industrial area with the continual sound of heavy rigs, somebody had planted a wooden sign with burned-on letters: "NICKELSVILLE." This was a reference to the belief by advocates for the homeless that Mayor Greg Nickels is not exactly their friend.

    • Complaint slams Canada for failing human rights in Downtown Eastside

Posted by Shemuses from The Tyee

While the deteriorating Downtown Eastside has been debated repeatedly during this year's municipal campaign, Canada's poorest urban postal code hasn't garnered much press in the federal election -- beyond a predictable tussle over Insite. In what could be a hearty nudge to remind the country about the federal government's responsibility to the neighbourhood, the Pivot Legal Society made a submission to the United Nations Human Rights Council's Universal Periodic Review that claims "Canada is failing to meet key international obligations on the issue of housing and homelessness in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside."
