    • Immigration raid largest in U.S. history

      Posted by Damianmann

Federal officials say a raid at a northeastern Iowa meat processing plant this week was the largest in U.S. history, in terms of the number of people arrested. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials say 390 people have been arrested on immigration charges after Monday's raid at Agriprocessors Inc. in Postville, the world's largest kosher meatpacking plant.

    • Juan Crow in Georgia

Posted by Shemuses from The Nation

Justeen Mancha's dream of becoming a psychologist was born of the tropical heat and exploitation that have shaped farmworker life around Reidsville, Georgia, for centuries. The wiry, freckle-faced 17-year-old high school junior has toiled in drought-dry onion fields to help her mother, Maria Christina Martinez. But early one September morning in 2006, Mancha's dream was abruptly deferred.

    • Don’t Turn Social Security into an Immigration Agency

      Posted by Shemuses

On March 26, 2008, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) issued a proposed rule that attempts to turn a Social Security Administration (SSA) benefits program into an immigration enforcement tool. If implemented, the rule will result in tens of thousands of lawful immigrant workers and U.S. citizens losing their jobs and the loss of at least $1 billion dollars to businesses each year. Each year, SSA sends "no-match letters" to workers and employers when the names or Social Security numbers (SSNs) listed in an employer's records do not match SSA's records. The letter's purpose is to notify workers and employers of the discrepancy and to alert workers that they are not receiving proper credit for their earnings...

    • What line must undocumented immigrants get in?

      Posted by Shemuses

Enough of the anti-immigrant rhetoric already. It's bad enough that radio shock jocks and cable TV personalities demonize undocumented immigrants. But what bothers me even more is the reflexive response by many well-meaning Americans that undocumented immigrants ought to "get in line and wait their turn." What these Americans don't realize is that our immigration system is so broken that there is no line.

    • Minutemen Internal E-mails Show ‘Classic Racism’

      Posted by Shemuses

An immigrant rights organization released this week alarming internal e-mails circulated among members of the San Diego Minutemen, considered one of the most aggressive, anti-illegal immigrant groups in the United States. Although this group publicly maintains that it is not racist and opposes only illegal immigration, the candid communications among its members frequently describe immigrants as "cockroaches" and "Third-World animals," among other pejorative terms. One e-mail from June 2007 says group members would "need a portable battery operated freezer...for store of filets, hams and ribs of well-marbled border crossers " during an outing to stop illegal border crossers.

Perfectly Legal Immigrants, Until They Applied for Citizenship

Posted by Shemuses from New York Times

The Servanos are among a growing group of legal immigrants who reach for the prize and permanence of citizenship, only to run afoul of highly technical immigration statutes that carry the severe penalty of expulsion from the country. For the Servanos, the problem has been a legal hitch involving their marital status when they came from the Philippines some 25 years ago. Largely overlooked in the charged debate over illegal immigration, many of these are long-term legal immigrants in the United States who were confident of success when they applied for naturalization, and would have continued to live here legally had they not sought to become citizens.

NPR: Bill Gates Targets Visa Rules for Tech Workers

NPR let Gates dodge most of the questions refusing to follow up or request him to answer the question they asked. Gates kept returning to his talking points.

Microsoft | Revamp visa system, Gates urges Congress | Seattle Times Newspaper

Gates seemed to laugh before he answered the question about whether more H1B visa workers depress wages in the U.S. The laugh seems like a tell to me i.e. he’s lying.
