Another Storm Brewing in Jena, LA | The Jena 600

      Posted by Shemuses

Just as news about the shameful saga of the Jena 6 has been waning, there's a new reason to keep the spotlight on Jena, Louisiana. When the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) recently rounded up 600 people at Howard Industries in Laurel Mississippi-in the largest single workplace raid in U.S. history-they sent most of the arrested workers two hours away to a federal detention center in, none other than, Jena. Now we have the Jena 600.

    • Immigrants cause global warming, says Australian university study

Posted by Shemuses from The Advertiser

Researchers at Monash University have released "Labor's Greenhouse Aspirations," a report that cites population growth as a major factor in carbon emissions. From there, the authors called for renewed restrictions on immigration, to "stabilize" the population by 2050. The report assumes that all migrants will live at "twice the standard of living, like all Australians." Named after an Australian general, Monash has also opened campuses in South Africa and Malaysia.

Undocumented Farm Worker Becomes Brain Surgeon

      Posted by Shemuses

Good things don't necessarily come to those who wait, but rather to those who persist and work hard. That's the credence of Dr. Alfredo Quiñones-Hinojosa, a Johns Hopkins University neurosurgeon who started his education at San Joaquin Delta College and whose work is followed on the ABC hospital documentary series 'Hopkins.' doctorThe once undocumented farm laborer now also directs Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center's brain tumor surgery program and leads research on the role of stem cells in brain tumors and brain cancer. "I feel I am paying back to this society and this country for all the opportunities I was given," Quiñones-Hinojosa, 40, said.

      McCain's

      Posted by Shemuses

A big part of politics, aside from the candidates stumping from city to city, are the campaign's television advertisements. In some cases, these advertisements outlast the candidates and the race itself. Usually, the advertisements spotlight the candidates' interaction with the public and the issues of the day. That's why, the latest advertisement by the McCain campaign entitled "God's Children" is a puzzlement and a sad commentary on the state of the Republican Party, not to mention, an offensive piece of footage to all Latinos, whether Republican, Democrat or Independent...

When An Immigrant Mom Gets Arrested

      Posted by Shemuses

BEHIND THE THICK GLASS THAT RUNS THE LENGTH of the Yuba County Jail's visitation corridor, Tatyana Mitrohina's eyes glisten, and then fill with tears as she recounts the last time she saw her son. "During the visit, he climbed into my arms and fell asleep with his head on my shoulder while I walked around with him," she remembers.

    • Mexico Cracks Down on Cubans

      Posted by Shemuses

For the first time, Mexican immigration authorities have launched raids on safe houses where Cubans await transportation to the U.S. border. In the first such raid, reported widely throughout Mexico on July 2, 20 Cubans were arrested in Cancun. Once Cubans present themselves to U.S. officials on the border, they are automatically granted asylum in the United States. Mexicans are angered at the disparate U.S. laws that give Cubans permanent residency while Mexicans attempting to enter the United States are deported. Mexico's President Felipe Calderon has also ordered Mexico's Navy to increase patrols in the Yucatan Channel, the body of water that separates Cuba and Cancun.

B.C. apologizes for Komagata Maru incident

I’m all for political correctness under most circumstances, but this one kind of reeks of political pandering to me. And misplaced pandering, at that. Why apologise now for that incident, when a whole bunch of injustices perpetrated to two larger Asian immigrant populations in BC – the Chinese and Japanese – remain unanswered? Were earlier apologies for specific incidents supposed to be blanket apologies?

NPR: Bill Gates Targets Visa Rules for Tech Workers

NPR let Gates dodge most of the questions refusing to follow up or request him to answer the question they asked. Gates kept returning to his talking points.

Microsoft | Revamp visa system, Gates urges Congress | Seattle Times Newspaper

Gates seemed to laugh before he answered the question about whether more H1B visa workers depress wages in the U.S. The laugh seems like a tell to me i.e. he’s lying.
