Impeachment

    • Congress has already paid for the victory parade

Posted by Jeff from Seattle Post-Intelligencer

Tucked away in fine print in the military spending bill for this past year was a lump sum of $20 million to pay for a celebration in the nation's capital "for commemoration of success" in Iraq and Afghanistan. Not surprisingly, the money was not spent. Now congressional Republicans are saying, in effect, maybe next year. A paragraph written into spending legislation and approved by the Senate and House allows the $20 million to be rolled over into 2007.

They [the press] are quite concerned, I believe, about whether a Democratic congress is going to behave properly. Certainly, the voice of beltway intellectual torpor, Joe Klein, is concerned that dark hued Democratic members have a problem with proper decorum. (We all saw that horrible, horrible funeral for Coretta Scott King.)

    • Conyers: No Rush to Impeachment

Posted by Billbar from Washington Post

So, rather than seeking impeachment, I have chosen to propose comprehensive oversight of these alleged abuses. The oversight I have suggested would be performed by a select committee made up equally of Democrats and Republicans and chosen by the House speaker and the minority leader.

    • New Mexico Democrats Call for Bush Impeachment

Posted by Damianmann from Truth Out

The New Mexico Democratic Party is calling for President Bush's removal from office. Party Chairman John Wertheim said Tuesday that delegates to Saturday's state party convention supported a call for the president's impeachment largely because of "perceived abuses of power and corruption in the Bush administration." He listed as examples of abuses of power, warrantless wiretapping of US citizens, the misstatement of facts preceding the invasion of Iraq, and the scandal surrounding the indictment of Vice President **** Cheney's former top aide in connection with the leak of the identity of a covert CIA operative.

    • More Americans favor impeaching Bush, poll says

Posted by Billbar from KRT Wire

A poll released last week by Zogby International showed 52 percent of American adults thought Congress should consider impeaching Bush if he wiretapped U.S. citizens without court approval, including 59 percent of independents and 23 percent of Republicans. (The survey had a margin of error of 2.9 percentage points.)

Bush claims executive privilege on CIA leak

The approval of Mukasey’s appointment was another act of doubling down by the Democrats in Congress. There were warning signs about Mukasey – but the Dems approved the appointment because they were saving the real battle for November.

I just don’t see a downside to this, & don’t understand the carping about being too late, unrealistic, etc.

We need to hold presidents accountable for committing crimes against humanity, international law, & the US Constitution 1) because it’s the ethical thing to do, & failing to do it amounts to complicity, & 2) because it sets a precedent for future administrations. I believe these considerations should override political expediency.

And as for political expediency, seems to me the best thing for Obama & the worst thing for McCain would be to hold up the misdeeds of this Republican White House to public scrutiny over the next few months.
