      Indonesian quake death toll passes 4,300

      After sleeping outside in streets and fields, Indonesian earthquake survivors scavenged their wrecked villages Sunday for food, clothing and anything of use as the death toll rose to more than 4,300. Some 200,000 people were left homeless. Waves of aftershocks compounded the terror of the magnitude-6.3 quake, which flattened villages and towns on densely populated Java island early Saturday.

      UN pulls staff from E Timor chaos

      About 390 people will be flown out, starting this weekend, leaving about 50 staff to keep the UN mission to East Timor (Unmiset) running. Militias armed with guns and machetes have rampaged though the capital, Dili, torching houses and vehicles. Prime Minister Mari Alkatiri said the country was facing a coup attempt, but did not know who was behind it.

      Quake kills at least 2,900 in Indonesia

      A powerful earthquake flattened homes and hotels in central Indonesia early Saturday as people slept, killing at least 2,900 and injuring thousands more in the nation's worst disaster since the 2004 tsunami. The magnitude-6.2 quake struck at 5:54 a.m. near the ancient city of Yogyakarta, 250 miles east of the capital, Jakarta. It was centered about six miles below the surface.
