      Web inventor warns of 'dark' net

      The web should remain neutral and resist attempts to fragment it into different services, web inventor Sir Tim Berners-Lee has said. He warned that if the US decided to go ahead with a two-tier internet, the network would enter "a dark period".

      House Judiciary Committee Chairman F. James Sensenbrenner, Jr. (R-WI), and Ranking Democratic Member John Conyers, Jr. (D-MI) joined by others today introduced bipartisan legislation to preserve Internet freedom and competition H.R. 5417, the "Internet Freedom and Nondiscrimination Act of 2006," is aimed at maintaining "competitive and nondiscriminatory access to the Internet."

      We must embrace an open and non-discriminatory framework for the Internet of the 21st century. Therefore, it is my intention to be an original cosponsor of the Dorgan and Snowe net neutrality legislation to ensure that open, unimpaired and unencumbered Internet access for both its users and content providers is preserved as Congress debates the overhaul of our nation’s telecommunications laws. Any effort to fundamentally alter the inherently democratic structure of the Internet must be rejected.

      n an undercover operation targeting Americans seeking overseas sex tours, the FBI last year set up a web site that purported to offer "exotic excursions" to the Philippines and Thailand, where pedophiles often travel for sex with boys and girls. Although I support taking out pedophiles, I am convinced that all this pedophiles on the internet news is setting up a case for them to take the internet over " to protect the children." the real reason is they fear the free exchange of information.

    Maybe it’s the “resource hog” property of Firefox that has kept me away: my system seems alllergic to FF, as the whole thing overheats and shuts down within seconds of the program being accessed.

    Perhaps I should try Beta 3, and see what happens.

    Given all the press given to various forms of essentially-universal health care that Democratic candidates for the U.S. presidency currently propose, I thought this was very topical. In Canada there are constant threats to our version of universal care/Medicare at all levels – from encroaching privatization from U.S. owned clinics (which, thanks to NAFTA, we can’t remove despite their violation of the Canada Health Act) to extra payments for simple medical equiptment.

    This particular story has to do with efforts to deal with that smaller issue, of course. It’s easier to deal with, though, being strictly illegal. Blocking private care alternatives is a slightly more thorny human rights issue.
