The corporate toll on the Internet

      Posted by Billbar from Salon

After a series of acquisitions and re-acquisitions so tangled it would take Herodotus to adequately chronicle them -- AT&T is back, it's big, and according to consumer advocates and some of the nation's largest technology companies, AT&T wants to take over the Internet.

      Net clocks suffering data deluge

Posted by Billbar from BBC News

The problems caused by D-Link hardware came to light thanks to Danish contractor Poul-Henning Kamp who runs Denmark's time server. The data flood has seen his bandwidth bill rocket and Mr Kamp is contemplating shutting the server down as he cannot afford the continuing costs. Now, up to 90% of his daily traffic comes from D-Link devices. "It could be millions of D-Link devices," he said, "I have no way of figuring it out."

    • Podcast study shows they are a bust currently

Posted by Billbar from Ars Technica

Relatively few consumers appear to actively be taking advantage of podcasts. A Forrester Research study revealed that about 25 percent of online users had an interest in podcasts, yet in North America, only about one percent of online households actually download and listen to them.

    • Trouble on the line

Posted by Billbar from Guardian UK

VoIP customers around the world are discovering that their calls cannot be connected because telecom companies are blocking the movement of such traffic across the net. Telcos in the US and other countries are reluctant to have their bandwidth encroached on by traffic from which they earn no revenue.

I am excited for it – but I wish they would certify plug-ins a bit faster as they go along.

Firefox 3 Beta 3 Brings a New Browsing Interface

Maybe it’s the “resource hog” property of Firefox that has kept me away: my system seems alllergic to FF, as the whole thing overheats and shuts down within seconds of the program being accessed.

Perhaps I should try Beta 3, and see what happens.

Story | Victoria Times Colonist | Canadians urged to post health-care violations to new website

Given all the press given to various forms of essentially-universal health care that Democratic candidates for the U.S. presidency currently propose, I thought this was very topical. In Canada there are constant threats to our version of universal care/Medicare at all levels – from encroaching privatization from U.S. owned clinics (which, thanks to NAFTA, we can’t remove despite their violation of the Canada Health Act) to extra payments for simple medical equiptment.

This particular story has to do with efforts to deal with that smaller issue, of course. It’s easier to deal with, though, being strictly illegal. Blocking private care alternatives is a slightly more thorny human rights issue.
