  A tiny minority of downloaders treat the free e-book as a substitute for the printed book--those are the lost sales. But a much larger minority treat the e-book as an enticement to buy the printed book. They're gained sales. As long as gained sales outnumber lost sales, I'm ahead of the game.

- Democratic Win Bodes Well for Net Neutrality

  Adam Green, a spokesman for the liberal advocacy group Moveon.org, predicted that the election results would be a boon to the enactment of extensive Net neutrality regulations. "Internet freedom should not be a partisan issue. But Republicans have consistently been standing in the way, and there is zero doubt that the increased Democratic control of Congress will be fantastic news," said Green, whose group lobbies on the topic.

  From Cory Doctorow's fictional novel: *****un.org is runs on open source code (still in alpha release), creating a marketplace for trading and rewarding favors for your friends and like-minded strangers. It's pretty amazing to have something I invented for a science fiction novel turned into running code!

Sharing, compiling random bits of information into new patterns, and multi-tasking are becoming the new patterns of work. The impact is expected to challenge the accepted ways of doing things in the business world. It also raises some important questions for employers wanting to attract, and keep, the best.

- Internet control 'nears autonomy'

  Icann, the body which oversees the future of the net on behalf of the US, has been given more independence in a new agreement for the next three years. Dr Paul Twomey, ceo of Icann, said the deal was "a major step forward for Icann autonomy". The US government has pledged to cede control of the net to private sector hands at an unspecified future point.

Maybe it’s the “resource hog” property of Firefox that has kept me away: my system seems alllergic to FF, as the whole thing overheats and shuts down within seconds of the program being accessed.

Perhaps I should try Beta 3, and see what happens.

Given all the press given to various forms of essentially-universal health care that Democratic candidates for the U.S. presidency currently propose, I thought this was very topical. In Canada there are constant threats to our version of universal care/Medicare at all levels – from encroaching privatization from U.S. owned clinics (which, thanks to NAFTA, we can’t remove despite their violation of the Canada Health Act) to extra payments for simple medical equiptment.

This particular story has to do with efforts to deal with that smaller issue, of course. It’s easier to deal with, though, being strictly illegal. Blocking private care alternatives is a slightly more thorny human rights issue.
