An Artist and His Sub Surrender in Brooklyn

Posted by Shemuses from New York Times

At slack tide off Red Hook, Brooklyn, there are usually lots of things floating in the water, most of which you would not want to touch without the help of a good hazmat suit. But just after sunrise yesterday, something truly strange was bobbing there in the shallows near Pier 41: a submarine fashioned almost completely from wood, and inside it a man with an obsession.

BAE: the scandal that won't go away

      Posted by SoxFirst

The US Department of Justice is about to launch a criminal probe into the world's fourth largest arms dealer, BAE, over its corrupt dealings with Saudi Arabia. Bad for BAE, which is trying to make the Pentagon its biggest customer, and bad for Gordon Brown who takes over from Tony Blair as British PM.

      “Enemy Combatant” Designation Ruled Bogus

Posted by ptristam from Pierre Tristam

It’s a wonder it took that long — five years for a U.S. federal court finally to declare the designation of “enemy combatant,” at least when it’s slapped on lawful residents of the United States, null and void. If the government wants to hold terrorists in the United States, it must charge them with a crime—or release them, as it will have to do with Ali Saleh Kahlah al-Marri.

    • On Paris & Peter: The Media Circus That Could've Been

      Posted by Villagenyc

On Fox News, Rev. Al Sharpton weighed in by phone about what’s good for one is good for all, Geraldo and Shep Smith hollered and giggled and Greta worried that Hilton was ill, or perhaps, “twitching”. But then, of all the pundits, a very interesting comment came from the high priestess of outrageous and offensive right wing ideology herself, Ann Coulter. Of the madness, Coulter hypothesized, that if this were Tom Hanks, you wouldn’t have all this blood lust.

    • Alleged top world spammer arrested in Seattle

Posted by Shemuses from Globe and Mail

A 27-year-old man described as one of the world's most prolific spammers was arrested Wednesday, and federal authorities said computer users across the Web could notice a decrease in the amount of junk e-mail. “He's one of the top 10 spammers in the world,” said Tim Cranton, a Microsoft Corp. lawyer who is senior director of the company's Worldwide Internet Safety Programs. “He's a huge problem for our customers. This is a very good day.”

Cheney gets violent reception in Sydney

Obama’s comments on Australia’s prime minister were hilarious. I doubt Cheney will absorb much feedback. He’s not that kind of guy.
