Louisiana Governor Won’t Seek 2nd Term

Posted by Jeff from New York Times

“While so many still suffer, I am choosing to do what I believe is best for my state. I will focus my time and my energy for the next nine months on the people’s work, not on politics. After much thought and prayer, I have decided I will not seek re-election as your governor.”

      Saints to Reopen Superdome Tonight

Posted by Billbar from Associated Press

The Saints reopen the Superdome on Monday night with a game against Atlanta that's got all the trappings of a Super Bowl, from a performance by U2 to an appearance by the first President Bush to media from around the globe. More than anything, though, the game will be a celebration of one of the country's most unique cities, and the people who call it home.

      Remembrance of Bush's fiascoes

      Posted by Billbar from Salon

A fine column by Sidney Blumenthal. Bush could hardly wait to put remembrance of Katrina behind him. He rushed to the American Legion convention on Thursday to begin a series of speeches on the stakes in the war on terror and Iraq that will climax with his commemoration of Sept. 11. Framed by the tragic date, Bush hopes to recapture his image as the president holding the bullhorn while standing on the rubble of the World Trade Center. His idea of memory is the erasure of almost everything that has followed his heroic moment. He wishes to remember the past so long as most of it is forgotten.

    • Frank Rich: Return to the Scene of the Crime

Posted by Billbar from Truth Out

President Bush travels to the Gulf Coast this week, ostensibly to mark the first anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. Everyone knows his real mission: to try to make us forget the first anniversary of the downfall of his presidency. New Orleans was Iraq redux with an all-American cast. The discrepancy between Mr. Bush's "heckuva job" shtick and the reality on the ground induced a Cronkite-in-Vietnam epiphany for news anchors.

How much worse can it get for Hurricane Katrina Victims?

One of the many tragedies of the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina three years ago was the fact that insurance companies used the event to systematically deny claims, leaving victims further in desperate straits. That shouldn’t happen following any natural disaster, and even though the immediate storm effects did not cause as much damage as predicted, there are sure to be plenty of claims for flood damages throughout the Midwest and along Gustav’s path. If you or someone you know has been denied an insurance claim related to Gustav: that would be a site you should visit.

I’d like to see a little more objective view of the claim that insurance companies "used the event to systematically deny claims."

Insurance companies are generally in business to make money and they’re generally pretty good at paying ouit that they are contractually obligated to pay out. They insurance companies also buy their own insurance to shiled themselves against such things as hurricanes washing an insured area off the map.

Government entities are generally not concerned with making money, keeping balance sheets, tracking money, etc. Hence the Gov can shower billions on a disaster area where a company had better be well shielded against such disasters or it goes down.

I’m not saying that they never do anything illegal or unethical. They’re run by people, after all. I am saying that, unlike the Gov, they have to pay attention to where the money goes and they have to follow the laws and their contracts.

We’ll see if the Mayor (and the Governor) learned anything from Katrina, though if he’s announcing mandatory evac then I guess he did. Good for him.

Best wishes to all in the path of that monster.
