Others have read another concern into the commission's comments: the sculptor selected for the job, Lei Yixin, is Chinese, and the sculpture is being made in China of buff-colored stone. (The executive architect for the memorial, Ed Jackson Jr., said granite of that hue and quantity was not available elsewhere.) This "outsourcing," as critics have called it, has spawned an angry Web site, www.kingisours.com, and an investigation by the inspector general of the Interior Department.
