      U.S. recognizes Kosovo's independence

      Posted by Jeff from MSNBC

Kosovo's leaders had sent letters to 192 countries Monday seeking formal recognition of independence, and suspense gripped the capital as its citizens awaited backing from the key powers. But later Monday, President Bush said, “The Kosovars are now independent,”

    • US and Russia at loggerheads over Kosovo independence

      Posted by Sandyenglish

Tensions between the United States and Russia, already inflamed at the G8 summit last month, have erupted over the issue of independence for Kosovo. The dispute is also splitting Europe, emboldening secessionist movements elsewhere to press for independence and threatening further instability in the Balkan region. There is widespread fear of further violence whether independence goes ahead or not.

    • On eve of G-8 summit Tensions between US and Russia erupt in mutual recriminations

      Posted by Sandyenglish

In the run-up to this week’s Group of 8 summit of industrialized nations in Germany, tensions between the United States and Russia have led to an extraordinary series of public clashes on issues ranging from a US plan to install interceptor missiles and radar stations in Eastern Europe, to a US and European-backed push for Kosovan independence, to Washington’s arms shipments to Lebanon, to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s crackdown against oppositionist forces within Russia.

Washington should never have intervened in the Balkans. The region was a minor interest to Europe and of virtually no importance to America. The allies managed to replace ethnic cleansing with ethnic cleansing and, more than seven years after their glorious victory, have no idea how to finish their international project. At this point the West's primary goal should be to not make the problem worse, as would forcibly dismembering Kosovo and creating a potential failed state. Kosovo offers the U.S. a foreign policy model of what not to do: intervene in a distant civil war of no geopolitical concern to America.

      The Edge of Madness

      Posted by Billbar from Antiwar

Almost 11 years after the Dayton Accords, Bosnia is not a centralized, Muslim-dominated country. Seven years after KLA thugs rode into Kosovo on NATO tanks, that province is not yet independent from Serbia. The passage of time reinforces differences between wishful thinking and reality, creating cognitive dissonance and frustration that occasionally spill over into acts that can only be described as madness. History is a graveyard littered with bones of peoples who "trusted" the great powers to do the right thing.

They seem more qualified at civil disobedience than Americans of late.
