    • As Turkey-Iraq crisis escalates, US plans military strikes on PKK bases

      Posted by Sandyenglish

Washington is clearly desperate to prevent a Turkish military intervention in Iraq or a breach in the US/Turkish alliance. Quite apart from long-term strategic considerations, the US military funnels around 70 percent of its air cargo to Iraq via a major US air base in southern Turkey. At the same time, more than 1,000 Turkish troops are in Afghanistan as part of NATO forces, helping to prop up the US-led occupation of that country.

    • Lenore G. Martin: Turkey's Iraq Problem

Posted by Billbar from Washington Post

If the United States does not oppose a Turkish invasion it will face a more chaotic situation in Iraq and the loss of a long-term relationship with the Iraqi Kurds, who are Washington's best hope for obtaining rights for U.S. bases in the future. If Washington opposes the invasion, it risks further estrangement from Turkey, a state positioned to play a critical strategic role in a region where Iran increasingly challenges the United States for dominance.

Kurdish rebels warn of "hell" after Turkey blasts

      Posted by Billbar from Reuters

The Kurdish Liberation Hawks (TAK) said it bombed a busy shopping area in the coastal resort Antalya on Monday, killing three people and wounding dozens, including European and Middle Eastern tourists. The blast followed four bombs in the Mediterranean resort of Marmaris and in Istanbul that wounded 27 people. "We vow to turn the monstrous TC (Turkish Republic) into hell ... with our warriors who have pledged revenge," TAK said in a statement on its Web site. It was not immediately possible to verify its authenticity. More than 30,000 people have since been killed in the separatist conflict.

Lenore G. Martin: Turkey's Iraq Problem

While I don't agree with the aims and solutions proffered by Martin, she is right that we are in an untenable position - caught in between two allies. Turkey, with the approval of Iran, may escalate to full-scale war with Kurdistan. Remember Cyprus.
