Lessig Bets On the Net To Clean Up Government

      Posted by Jeff from Slashdot

Larry Lessig really 'gets it' when it comes to the efficacy of distributed open source code production. Now he is attempting to use distributed production methods to expose corruption in the US Congress with the launch of another 'CC' organization - this time it's called 'Change Congress'. Change Congress will use a Google mash-up to create a map depicting which legislators have taken the CC pledge, which have declined, and which have signaled support for planks in the Change-Congress platform

    • Lessig Campaign and the Change Congress Movement

      Posted by Jeff from Slashdot

Larry Lessig has created a Lessig08 website, and it looks like he is getting serious about running for congress. In his introduction video he proposes the creation of a national "Change Congress" movement which would try to limit the influence of money in the electoral and legislative processes. Drawing upon common law-like power, the court expanded the Copyright Act in the Grokster case to cover a form of liability it had never before recognized in the context of copyright — the wrong of providing technology that induces copyright infringement. Now "we the people" will have another strong, organized voice in how we are governed. Maybe this process will also help more understand how government works – or should work – and decisions can be made more on factual information and less on emotional advertising.

This is quite exciting. It’s happening this year and it could help back up Obama’s pledges to reduce financial power of lobbyists in Washington.
