    • Lobbying is big business in Washington State

      Only five states have lobbyist spending exceeding Washington's, according to the Center for Public Integrity, a government watchdog group that has compiled overall lobby spending totals for all 50 states. In Washington, the reported spending for the first five months is again on track to exceed the $43 million spent last year, according to state public disclosure records.

    • Michigan iPod proposal influenced by Apple's dime?

      The trip, which was reportedly funded in part by Apple, led to a $36 million proposal by Dillon last week to provide all Michigan students with iPods that they could use to download lectures and educational materials. Representatives for Dillon did not provide details on the trip or say whether Apple paid for all or part of it, but Gillard is reported to have expressed his belief that the iPod maker covered at least a portion of the costs.

      Congress Finds Ways to Avoid Lobbyist Limits

      Instead of picking up the lawmaker’s tab, lobbyists pay a political fund-raising committee set up by the lawmaker. In turn, the committee pays the legislator’s way. Lobbyists and fund-raisers say such trips are becoming increasingly popular, partly as a quirky consequence of the new ethics rules.
