      I grew up near the Santa Monica Mall. Santa Monica Place was the first modern, then considered "better" American mall design. Yet, it was sterile... a hint of a thousand Starbucks to come. Why would anyone have thought an indoor mall near the beach in Los Angeles would be a good idea?
