  Follow-up on the Louisiana racist sheriff story. Targeting people based on hairstyles common among blacks is "overtly racist" and a civil rights violation, the Louisiana ACLU said in a two-page open letter dated Wednesday and signed by attorney Katie Schwartzmann. "Sheriff Strain, surely we do not have to tell you that it is lawful to walk the street, and it is further lawful to wear one's hair any way deemed appropriate," Schwartzmann wrote.

- Blanco signs law that would ban abortions

  Louisiana Democratic Gov. Kathleen Blanco signed into law a ban on most abortions, which would be triggered if the U.S. Supreme Court overturns its 1973 ruling legalizing the procedure, and is similar to a South Dakota law that has become the latest focus of the abortion battle.
