Patch of Saturn's Moon Resembles Earth

      Posted by Billbar from Space.com

New radar images of Saturn's moon Titan reveal dunes, hills, valleys and rivers that scientist say look a lot like home. But on Titan, which is frigid and shrouded in smog, the features are likely carved in ice rather than solid ground. The detailed view is of a bright area on Titan called Xanadu. It's about the size of Australia and has been studied from afar for years.

    • Plasma bubble could protect astronauts on Mars trip

Posted by Billbar from New Scientist Space

The details still need to be worked out, but the basic approach is clear. A high voltage device on the spacecraft would tear the hydrogen into its constituent protons and electrons. This plasma would then be spewed out into space, creating a cloud around the spacecraft. There would need to be a wire mesh outside the spacecraft and enclosing the plasma cloud. Electricity supplied to the mesh would keep an electrical current running in the plasma cloud and help confined it near the spacecraft. The plasma's magnetic field would be a powerful deflector of cosmic rays, equivalent to aluminium shielding several inches thick, John Slough of the University of Washington says.

Mars rover Spirit finds metallic meteorites

Posted by Billbar from New Scientist Space

Two iron meteorites have been spotted by the Mars rover Spirit, mission scientists have announced. The finds are the first meteorites identified by Spirit, although its twin, Opportunity, discovered a similar space rock on the other side of the planet in January 2005.

MRO: Delicate Dips into the Martian Atmosphere

      Posted by Billbar from Space.com

NASA’s newest mission to the red planet—the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO)—is working well as it shaves off altitude in order to swing into active science-gathering duties later this year. The initial capture by Mars’ gravity put the spacecraft into a very elongated, 35-hour orbit.
