1,200 Marketers Can’t Be Wrong: The Future Is in Consumer Behavior

Posted by Jeff from New York Times

The ability of new media to monitor what consumers are doing — like keeping track of which Web sites they visit — is fueling the interest in behavioral targeting. Several speakers also described how they were using traditional media to more precisely aim advertising at consumers based on behavior, through steps like tailored television commercials.

      Microsoft overhauls Zune

Posted by Jeff from Seattle Post-Intelligencer

"It's a great player -- for 2006," said Matt Rosoff, analyst at research firm Directions on Microsoft. He said the improvements put the company "where they probably should have been last year, when they launched."

    • Microsoft to set time limit for storing data on Web searches

Posted by Jeff from Seattle Times

Microsoft is announcing changes to its privacy policy Monday that set a time limit on how long the company will retain data about customer queries through its search engine. The policy, seen as an attempt to distinguish itself from Google, also allows people to opt out of targeted ads by third-party advertisers using Microsoft's Windows Live service.

    • Microsoft's annual revenues are up 15 percent

Posted by Jeff from Seattle Post-Intelligencer

Meanwhile, Microsoft's quarterly results revealed deeper losses in its Internet-related initiatives. That part of the company continues to hire employees and build data centers to compete with Google and Yahoo. But Microsoft posted a 33 percent increase in online advertising sales, a rare sign of progress in that competition.

    Microsoft abandons Yahoo bid

This Yahoo bid was stupid from the beginning. Microsoft was going to spend all its cash to chase Google in the advertising business? Huh? Ballmer clearly backed down when he didn’t want to ante up. I suspect the Microsoft board had second thoughts as well.

Microsoft's $528 million Washington tax break

You are misunderstanding – this is about Washington B & O taxes on corporations, not income taxes.

At best a year to get the deal closed, two for integration. Multiple groups on each side working on similar projects… Sounds like a great idea and a nightmare to integrate.

Your concern that Microsoft is avoiding paying income taxes to the State of Washington is based on the erroneous belief that there is an income tax in Washington. Please check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/State_income_tax

I really don’t know what you’re belly aching about.

Bill Gates Issues Call For Kinder Capitalism

I honestly never would have predicted such thinking from BG several years ago.

What I want to see now is the staunch capitalist’s response to such thinking. Maybe the Economist will have something (dismissive and venomous, as usual) to say about it…
