  I was recently in a reality TV show called The Search For The Next Pussycat Doll, where I was competing against a group of beautiful, talented young women to be part of the ultimate, multi-platinum-selling girl group - the Pussycat Dolls. Reality TV is an amazing thing; it’s like being in a fish bowl. Suddenly millions of people know who I am…but I didn’t just come about overnight.

  It all started when I got a phone call from this guy named Ben Marguiles, who co-wrote and produced most of Mariah Carey’s first record. He had received a demo of my songs that I wrote and recorded when I was 16 years old, he liked what he heard and he called me. He wanted to fly me out to Santa Barbara to record a song with him. I just assumed it was a lie, because everyone knew I grew up listening to Mariah Carey. I thought it was probably just someone messing with me.

  Mixtapes are, by definition, unregulated: DJs don’t get permission from record companies, and record companies have traditionally ignored and sometimes bankrolled mixtapes, reasoning that they serve as valuable promotional tools. And rappers have grown increasingly canny at using mixtapes to promote themselves.
