Thousands flee as Gustav grows toward Category 5

      Posted by Jeff

Gustav is expected to become an "extremely dangerous" Category 5 storm, the most powerful hurricane possible, as it roars through Cuba and heads toward the U.S. Gulf coast. Category 5 storms have sustained winds of more than 249 kilometres per hour. Winds of that speed will create a storm surge of more than five metres, rip off most roofs and completely destroy mobile homes, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami. The city of New Orleans, devastated in 2005 by hurricane Katrina is watching the storm's path with great concern. Forecasters say the hurricane could strike anywhere between the Florida Panhandle to Texas, but there is a good chance that New Orleans will be buffeted by tropical-storm-force winds.

      Gustav plows through Caymans

      Posted by Jeff from MSNBC

The storm, which killed up to 77 people in the Caribbean, is still on track to strike the heavy concentration of U.S. oil and natural gas platforms off Louisiana. The most likely track has it going ashore west of New Orleans on Tuesday.

New Orleans: Evacuate, or face storm alone

      Posted by Jeff from MSNBC

Police with bullhorns plan to go street to street with a tough message about getting out ahead of Hurricane Gustav: This time there will be no shelter of last resort. The doors to the Superdome will be locked. Those who stay will be on their own. Authorities issued the warning Friday as new forecasts made it increasingly clear that New Orleans will get some kind of hit - direct or indirect - as early as Monday.

Bush White House: Foreign Katrina aid rejected, unused

      Posted by Jeff from MSNBC

Allies offered $854 million in cash and in oil that was to be sold for cash. But only $40 million has been used so far for disaster victims or reconstruction, according to U.S. officials and contractors. Most of the aid went uncollected, including $400 million worth of oil. Some offers were withdrawn or redirected to private groups such as the Red Cross.

    • Surge in homeless hits New Orleans

Posted by Jeff from Christian Science Monitor

Hurricane-ravaged New Orleans faces a major crisis with homelessness. Already taxed to the breaking point on many fronts, the city has a homeless population that is now approximately double what existed before the storm – in a city half its previous size. Facing a severe shortage of affordable housing, displaced residents returning to the city along with an influx of construction trade workers are being forced to sleep in everything from cars to flooded-out houses...

      Nagin: Racism slowed Katrina effort

      Posted by Billbar from MSNBC

New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin on Friday blamed racism and government bureaucracy for hamstringing his city's ability to weather Hurricane Katrina and recover from the disaster that struck the Gulf Coast nearly a year ago. "And I, to this day, believe that if that would have happened in Orange County, California, if that would have happened in South Beach, Miami, it would have been a different response," the mayor said.

In New Orleans, Each Resident Is Master of Plan to Rebuild

Posted by Jeff from New York Times

Mayor C. Ray Nagin has referred to the process as “democracy in action.” And, superficially, it sounds like one of the most stirring grass-roots planning movements imaginable, one that would help preserve the rich heterogeneity that gives the city its vibrant urban character. Yet this freewheeling approach has shifted attention from the critical and more daunting challenge of reimagining the city’s infrastructure.

    Gustav plows through Caymans

One of the many tragedies of the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina three years ago was the fact that insurance companies used the event to systematically deny claims, leaving victims further in desperate straits. That shouldn’t happen following any natural disaster, and even though the immediate storm effects did not cause as much damage as predicted, there are sure to be plenty of claims for flood damages throughout the Midwest and along Gustav’s path. If you or someone you know has been denied an insurance claim related to Gustav: that would be a site you should visit.
