    • Five To Fifteen Years: The Life Of An Inmate

      Posted by Orato

Last year, I stumbled upon a prisoner's blog in which the inmate expressed his desire to maintain a link with the outside world while maintaining his anonymity. I contacted Prisoner X through this blog and requested an interview. Some months later, a letter from a state department of correctional services turned up in the mailbox. Here's his story.

    • CodyLyon'sblogolater: New York's Eastern Bloc-An East Village Portrait

      Posted by Villagenyc

There’s no denying the historical irony and unspoken sense of triumph over the oppression and drabness that much of the Eastern Bloc once represented. In fact, from 1934 to 1986, the Soviet Union criminalized homosexuality, considering it to be a product of western decadence, landing thousands of gays in gulags. Inside this 2006 New York City version of the Eastern Bloc, a little decadence was acceptable, perhaps encouraged. Story of three bartenders creation.

    • Bukowski Spotting In New York

      Posted by Orato

A holiday in New York is a treat indeed. But a holiday in New York, complete with a 60-seat theatre portrayal of the Godfather of trashy, intoxicated, cigarette-stained prose, sitting so close you can almost smell his grubby underwear? Now that's the Big Apple with a cherry on top.

How Would A Patriot Act, Pt. 1

      Posted by Billbar from firedoglake

Glenn Greenwald’s background as a First Amendment attorney has enabled him to do more than almost anyone to follow the subversive efforts of the Bush Administration to twist and contort the law as it spies on the nation’s citizens. As he asserts within the title of his new book — How Would a Patriot Act? Defending American Values From a President Run Amok – his critique comes from the perspective of a patriot, not a partisan.

Subtropic warming could mean bigger deserts

      Posted by Billbar from Reuters

The dry subtropical climate regions, which contain some of the world's major deserts, could encroach into temperate regions, John Wallace, an atmospheric scientist and co-author of a research paper in this week's Science journal, said. Areas such as the Mediterranean, southern Europe and the northern part of the Middle East could have a tendency toward more drought, Wallace said.

City May Seek Permit and Insurance for Many Kinds of Public Photography

One of the many tragedies of the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina three years ago was the fact that insurance companies used the event to systematically deny claims, leaving victims further in desperate straits. That shouldn’t happen following any natural disaster, and even though the immediate storm effects did not cause as much damage as predicted, there are sure to be plenty of claims for flood damages throughout the Midwest and along Gustav’s path. If you or someone you know has been denied an insurance claim related to Gustav: that would be a site you should visit.

It's kind of unbelievable that no one has anything to say about this. But, that's CommonTimes. They're a shy bunch over here.
