      At least five foreign workers -- two Britons, a German, an Irish and Polish -- were snatched by armed men from the Goodfellas nightclub shortly before midnight on Sunday, in the southern oil city of Port Harcourt. It was the fifth kidnapping of oil workers in Africa's top oil producer this month, and follows a wave of militant attacks against the oil industry which have cut Nigerian production by a quarter since February.

      Nigerian Entangled In Jefferson Investigation

      The corruption investigation of Rep. William J. Jefferson (D-La.) has uncovered ties to Atiku Abubakar, the vice president of Nigeria. Jefferson, who was a member of a House Ways and Means trade subcommittee, got to know Abubakar after the Nigerian was elected vice president in 1999. Later, Jefferson turned to Abubakar for help in winning a lucrative Nigerian telecommunications contract for a high-tech firm in Kentucky that was paying Jefferson bribes, according to an FBI affidavit. Jefferson told a business associate in a secretly taped conversation that Abubakar was "corrupt" and needed a hefty bribe and a cut of the profits in return for his help -- allegations Abubakar has strongly denied.

      Six policemen with bullet wounds in them, were found floating in a river in Nigeria's oil capital, Port Harcourt. Militants have staged a series of attacks in the region recently to push their demands that local people should benefit more from the oil wealth.

      Nigeria pipeline blast kills up to 200 people

      A pipeline explosion killed up to 200 people on the outskirts of Nigeria's biggest city Lagos on Friday, leaving charred corpses on a sandy beach where locals went to tap into the pipe to steal fuel. The Red Cross said the pipeline blew up while thieves were drilling into it, igniting about 500 jerrycans of fuel. Theft of petrol or crude oil from pipelines is common in Nigeria.
