      Social Networking’s Next Phase

Posted by Jeff from New York Times

Everyone wants to run a social network. This story discusses the boom of platform solutions - like NewsCloud - for groups of all stripes to social-network-ize their Web sites. I think it's a federated ship bound to sink. These solutions need to offer unfederated network opportunities - kudos to the author for mentioning OpenID.

Ah. Makes sense. I agree. Open ID is a good first step—it will be interesting to see if the technology for profile sharing actually gets much adoption—there is so much incentive for the big guys to try to maintain their silos.

Jon, By federated – I mean too many sites wanting people to register and set up profiles in their isolated universes… it can’t scale. Open profiles are the key.

Can you elaborate on what you mean by the “federated ship bound to sink?”
