      Northwest's Crosscut to Switch to Nonprofit Model

      As they say, these are exciting times in media, including here at Crosscut. We have been exploring a significant shift in our business model, from a for-profit company (as we have been since starting in April, 2007) to a nonprofit model. The goal, if we decide to make the shift, is a Crosscut.com that has the potential of growing bigger and faster, thanks to additional streams of revenue from donors and members.

      Seattle becoming hub of microfinance movement

      The concept of microlending -- giving $50 to $300 to entrepreneurs in developing countries -- has been around for more than three decades, but is now starting to heat up. And Seattle, which houses three large microfinancing organizations, is becoming a hub of support. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has also lent clout to the concept by making microfinance grants a part of its Strategic Opportunities division.

    • CEOs of non-profits say they bring in top dollar

      Some of the Seattle ExDirs are making over $200,000. That's eyebrow raising. With average compensation of $114,000, the chief executives of Seattle-area non-profits are among the lowest paid in the nation, though most still bring in six-figure incomes. Nationally, charity leaders earn an average of $142,000 per year in salary and benefits, according to a compensation study released last week by Charity Navigator.
