    • Former NSA officer alleges illegal activities under Hayden

      Posted by Billbar from GovExec

Russell Tice, who worked on what are known as "special access programs," at the NSA said he plans to tell Senate staffers next week that unlawful activity occurred at the agency under the supervision of Gen. Michael Hayden beyond what has been publicly reported, while hinting that it might have involved the illegal use of space-based satellites and systems to spy on U.S. citizens.

    • Most Americans Support NSA's Efforts

Posted by Damianmann from Washington Post

The new survey found that 63 percent of Americans said they found the NSA program to be an acceptable way to investigate terrorism, including 44 percent who strongly endorsed the effort. Another 35 percent said the program was unacceptable, which included 24 percent who strongly objected to it. When The Washington Post says it, it must be true...he said sarcastically.

    • Memo to Caucus on NSA program

Posted by Billbar from Crooks and Liars

This Executive Branch cannot be trusted to police itself – particularly if investigators at the Department of Justice are denied the security clearances to review the legality of the NSA Program. The Judicial Branch – the Article III judges of the FISA Court – cannot conduct effective checks on surveillance of U.S. persons if the Bush Administration conducts an end-run around the judges of the Court.

    • Editorial on the NSA Phone Spying

I understand the optimism, and that all Americans should cast a sharp eye at the President's doings, but the Republicans in the House and Senate will bury this. Yes, Arlen Specter will again bluster and such, but nothing will be done. Not, at least, until this hits the Supremes.

    • No need for Congress, no need for courts

Posted by Billbar from Glenn Greenwald

But there is one highly significant, and revealing, item buried in the USA Today article regarding Qwest's refusal to cooperate with the NSA’s demands (and it heroic refusal to capitulate to the NSA’s intimidation tactics and threats) that it turn over its customers' calling data. Hope you've got Qwest!

Is the NSA spying on U.S. Internet traffic?

Whether it's a legal or illegal operation, the descriptions definitely point to NSA monitoring of the internet. Time for another FOIA request, maybe a another lawsuit. Anyone know if there's a internet backbone node in St. Louis?
