Rupert Murdoch's Newspaper War: WSJ vs. NYT

      Posted by Jeff from Newsweek

When readers open their newspapers Monday morning, they will discover a Wall Street Journal fashioned to the tastes of the man who revolutionized media markets from Australia to North America. With its increased focus on politics, international news, culture and sports, Murdoch's reconceived Journal represents nothing short of a formal declaration of war on that most venerable of journalistic institutions, The New York Times.

    • Times to End Charges on Web Site

Posted by Jeff from New York Times

What changed, The Times said, was that many more readers started coming to the site from search engines and links on other sites instead of coming directly to NYtimes.com. These indirect readers, unable to gain access to articles behind the pay wall and less likely to pay subscription fees than the more loyal direct users, were seen as opportunities for more page views and increased advertising revenue.

NY Times Digital Reader Debuts -- But Will PC Users Pay for It?

Posted by Jeff from Editor and Publisher

This NYT subscribing Mac user says no: "What we're trying to accomplish with Times Reader is create a really delightful, natural reading experience on a screen," he said. "NYTimes.com is a fantastic Web site ... but it's many many different things at once. It's a huge news database; it's very deep in vertical categories; it's a place you can go and graze, and just pick up one thing. You could choose to read the entire paper if you wanted to, but it's a little bit of work.

    • New York Times adds sharing tool

Posted by Jeff from Seattle Post-Intelligencer

The New York Times now allows readers to share with Digg and Newsvine ... and FaceBook(?). Interesting move. Seems experimental to me. Definitely a coupe for Newsvine because they seem to gain the most from the deal. The New York Times is also adding a permalink feature (wow?). Anyway, this won't apply to premium firewall content.

Content wants to be free, or at least ad-supported. Good news.

I wonder what % of NYT readers are, in fact, Mac users? One would think they’d be smart about this, but I’m guessing their base skews more and more Mac every day. Disappointing that they locked in to MSFT.

I didn’t know Newsvine was connected to Disney. Did I read that right?
