    • The Truth about Pit Bulls and Lipstick | The Agonist

      Posted by Villagenyc from Agonist

Could it actually be a sign of pervasive sexism, that a woman candidate believes that in order to win her party's approval she must prove she's tough enough to run a nation by invoking analogous machismo by holding up a dog with a less than gentle reputation as an example of her strength? Is Palin and her party's attempt to elevate her into a tomboyish tough love Mom with conservative virtues a party that deep down, at least appears to be complacent with a woman knowing her place in the grand political game of the true powers that be in the western world?....

    • Please, Democrats, Don't Get Stupid Responding to Palin's Nomination

      Posted by Shemuses

McCain's selection of Sarah Palin as his running-mate has triggered a wide range of responses, none of which, interestingly enough, mention what a total dick move it was for McCain to make the announcement the morning after Obama's nomination speech, thus taking the speech out of the headlines for the remainder of the weekend news cyle. What concerns me is the initial, knee-jerk response offered by the Democrats: Today, John McCain put the former mayor of a town of 9,000 with zero foreign policy experience a heartbeat away from the presidency. Governor Palin shares John McCain's commitment to overturning Roe v. Wade, the agenda of Big Oil and continuing George Bush's failed economic policies -- that's not the change we need, it's just more of the same.

      After the Games, Tibet

Posted by Jeff from New York Times

The Chinese leadership and the Tibetan government in exile have delicately discussed a possible visit by the Dalai Lama to China, nominally to commemorate the victims of the earthquake in Sichuan Province in May. That would be the first meeting between the Dalai Lama and Chinese leaders in more than 50 years and would give enormous impetus to resolving the Tibet question.

    • Will Russia get away with it?

Posted by Jeff from Seattle Post-Intelligencer

Not that I ever agree with Bill Kristol - but I am glad he highlighted what I saw as one of the most pathetic aspects of Bush's Russia diplomacy failures. Georgia is the Republic with the third highest number of troops in Iraq - after Britain (2,000). So, while they are fighting Bush's war in Iraq, they lack 2,000 men at home to defend themselves against dictator Putin. Bush has failed to address Russia's democratic collapse throughout his entire term. It's one of his greatest failures.

    • The Obama candidacy and the new consensus on Afghanistan

      Posted by Sandyenglish

The statements made by Barack Obama during his visit to Afghanistan over the weekend verify that his campaign for president is the mouthpiece for a significant section of the American ruling elite that is insisting on a shift in US policy in the Middle East and Central Asia. Far from proposing any retreat from militarism, Obama is arguing for a faster drawdown of troop numbers in Iraq and a reduction in tensions with Iran, only in order to facilitate a major escalation of US military operations in Afghanistan, potentially extending them into Pakistan.

      Thomas Friedman: 9/11 and 4/11

Posted by Jeff from New York Times

What doesn't the Bush crowd get? It's this: We don't have a "gasoline price problem." We have an addiction problem. We are addicted to dirty fossil fuels, and this addiction is driving a whole set of toxic trends that are harming our nation and world in many different ways. It is intensifying global warming, creating runaway global demand for oil and gas, weakening our currency by shifting huge amounts of dollars abroad to pay for oil imports, widening "energy poverty" across Africa, destroying plants and animals at record rates and fostering ever-stronger petro-dictatorships in Iran, Russia and Venezuela.

    PROTECTION FROM WHAT???????????????

How can you think they are great?  A country that has a weaker economy, lower cultural level, higher criminal level, and lower lifestyles.  A country that supplies prostitution (with a high infectuous disease rate), drug and arms trafficking because of a corrupted regime and army, etc.

We are apart of a great regime that has more liberties than I care to extend.  A country that still favors INDEPENDENCE!!!!!!!!!   AND FREEDOM!!!!!!!!!!!

As far as being over in Iraq.

We made our move to help stop the war on terror.  What has Russia done?    We have taken our own means to "HELP" rebuild a country that counld one day become great again.

What positive influence has Russia had on this world???????

    Communists are great !

Don’t you think the fight is perfectly similar with the Korean War in 1951 between China and America ?!  Just a kind of self-protection. Much better than the invaders!

The real guy who needs to stay where they belong is the one who should  GET AWAY FROM IRAQ  right now !!!

How Lies Live and Grow in the Brain

The way our minds are wired matches the great dictum to not fight the darkness with the light, just make the light shine brighter. Science is so cool.

Great story.  I blog about food issues, and deal with this sort of "information filtering" all the time.    This story was the basis of my 4th of July post.
