Marc Emery: The Howard Roark Of The Pot Wars

      Posted by Orato

My hearing isn’t going to start on time on May 28. They’re going to change my dates because of other cases that they think are more important – murder trials and such. It’s been two years already. It’s easy to bump me because my case is unpopular in Canada. They know that the public isn’t behind this...

      It Takes A Village

      Posted by Orato

When I was at these parties, I was amazed first at how far I have come. I used to be quite intimidated by these sorts of functions; I was always so aware of the glaring differences between me and the other people in the room. I would look around the room and see nurses, occupational therapists, film industry folks, married moms, pastors…and me…an ex- hooker, drug addict, alcoholic, criminal, lacking certain social skills.

      The Illusion Of Artistic Corruption

      Posted by Orato

The recent media absurdity that Hip Hop is corrupting the nation's youth has forced me to weigh in. From early on I hoped Hip Hop would hop its way out of the mainstream and into the grave. Maybe a grave with a shiny spinning lid like the car rims. Clearly, I was wrong. It's here to stay and its popularity seems to be only increasing. Personally, I'd rather eat a Vaseline sandwich than see 'Lil John ever again...

    • There's no life like it: An essay on being a mother

      Posted by Orato

My friend Tom was persistent in his requests for me to join his writers group. He told me to just come once, write about something, or not. “You can do whatever you want,” my cheerful friend said, “the group is very supportive. That’s the whole point of getting together,” he would say somewhat paternalistically, “to support each other.” When I finally run out of excuses I commit to the next Tuesday night meeting. I’m nervous.

The Case Of The Missing Bees

      Posted by Orato

About a third of our diet comes from food that needs some form of pollination, most of which is done by insects. There are birds and butterflies that pollinate as well, but honeybees comprise the vast majority of pollinators. Without them, we wouldn’t get apples, almonds and blueberries, for example. About 25 per cent of America's bee population has gone missing.

      Greetings From Nunavut!

      Posted by Orato

I kind of thought I knew what I was getting myself into, in the sense that I’ve lived in small and remote communities before so I thought I’d be able to adapt quite well and it would be nothing out of the ordinary. I expected it would be somewhat different but was not prepared for how different life is up here...

Mr. Magni: Iceland's Singer Of The Year

      Posted by Orato

The name 'Magni' comes from Norse mythology (son of Thor) and means 'strong.' But today, the name brings a much different character to mind, for Magni was just awarded the People's Choice Award for Singer of the Year on the northwest European island of Iceland. Magni has been passionate about music since his youth and, in 1999, moved to Reykjavik and became the lead singer for the band Á Móti Sól.
