Obama draws 65,000 to Oregon rally

      Posted by Jeff from MSNBC

Fire officials estimated 65,000 packed into a riverside park for a spectacular afternoon rally at a sun-splashed scene on the banks of the Willamette River in Portland. They said an additional 15,000 were left outside and dozens of boaters could be seen floating in the river.

    • House debates nature of rights - OregonLive.com

Pretty fascinating rights-based framed debate in the Oregon legislature today on whether or not Health Care is a Right that state residents have inherently. Democrats argued that the right to quality medical care is an innate right where as Republicans did not. Oregon voters will get to decide the issue in November.

    • Ocean dead zones off Oregon coast

Posted by Jeff from Seattle Times

Dead zones off Oregon's coast that have threatened sea life for the past six summers are unprecedented in the historical record, say scientists at Oregon State University (OSU). The researchers combed through more than 50 years of ocean data to see if the extremely low oxygen levels measured recently also occurred in the past.

    • Water may split state into 'haves,' 'have-nots'

Posted by Jeff from Oregon Live

The Pacific Northwest faces an intense tug of war over vanishing water supplies if the region continues to warm as forecasts show, dividing people west of the Cascades from those east as water "haves" and "have-nots." And even abundant water west of the Cascades may be stretched as people fleeing from drier, hotter regions of the U.S. find refuge here.

Mount Hood Climbers: What Price Glory?

    Interesting comment from JoeDuck blog.
After that tragedy, in an effort to save future lives, a program was started wherein you can rent a locator unit for $5 at multitudes of locations on virtually every side of the mountain. $5. The program is well known, well advertised and climbers inquiring about climging Hood are encouraged to take them. It is not mandatory, however. Numerous lives have been saved because of their existence. The question comes up EVERY TIME this happens as to why someone would fail to carry such cheap insurance. It reminds me of people who drown when running whitewater without a lifejacket on – it defies common sense – but there are dozens of drowning in OR and WA every year attributable to that very reason.
