Send the prez-elect to Poland Climate Talks

      Posted by Jeff from Grist

In December 2009, the leaders of the world are scheduled to come together in Copenhagen to negotiate a successor to the Kyoto agreement. If there's any chance of that meeting providing a real breakthrough, though, there's much groundwork that needs to be done beforehand. In December 2008, after the American election but before Inauguration Day, the world is meeting in Poland to prepare for the Copenhagen climate talks. The winner of November's presidential election could rivet the world's attention on these negotiations if he flew to Poland in December and declared that the United States is back in the game.

"When my arguments were not reaching them, I gave instructions to terminate my membership," Walesa said. "It is not over the Kaczynskis, but that was the last straw."

Posted by Billbar from Guardian UK

Nine months after calling the idea unacceptable, Poland's ruling party yesterday made the identical Kaczynski twins the most powerful men in the country, naming Jaroslaw as Prime Minister to serve alongside the President, Lech, his junior by 45 minutes. 'I am afraid that with Jaroslaw Kaczynski as a new Prime Minister, Poland will become more extreme, more anti-European and a more xenophobic country,' said senior Civic Platform member Bronislaw Komorowski.

Polish minister fired in spy row

Posted by Billbar from BBC News

Polish Finance Minister Zyta Gilowska has been dismissed amid allegations that she covered up communist-era collaboration. In Poland, people who worked for the communist secret services can still hold public office, but it is an offence to lie about it.
