Unions Talk Race as Election Nears
Posted by Shemuses
Labor leaders who want desperately to chase the Republicans from the White House are confronting a hurdle in their outreach to members: the question of race. Obama's record on economic issues, they say, should put him way ahead of John McCain with working-class voters. But will the facts be enough to overcome some members' deep-seated prejudice? "We have people disguise it by saying he doesn't have enough experience, or they're not comfortable voting for him," says Kyle McDermott, field director in the Steelworkers' political department. "And we have people come at us and say, 'Look, I'm not going to vote for a black person.' They don't use as kind words as I just did."
Activist government could cure Canada's ills: economists' group
Posted by Shemuses from CBC
The federal government must take an activist role to counter financial crisis and stimulate economic investment, even if it means going into deficit, say more than 80 leading economists. In an open letter released Wednesday, the mostly left-leaning analysts say there are "worrisome weaknesses" in the Canadian economy that have been laid bare by wider global troubles. "Complacent expressions of faith in our 'fundamentals,' and other varieties of economic denial, will not protect Canadians from the coming storm," they warn. That appeared to be a shot across the bow of Conservative Leader Stephen Harper, who has repeatedly assured voters that the economic fundamentals are strong and that Canada need not fear the kind of turmoil gripping the United States.
Editorial of Attack

It is a sorry fact of American political life that campaigns get ugly, often in their final weeks. But Senator John McCain and Gov. Sarah Palin have been running one of the most appalling campaigns we can remember. They have gone far beyond the usual fare of quotes taken out of context and distortions of an opponent's record - into the dark territory of race-baiting and xenophobia. Senator Barack Obama has taken some cheap shots at Mr. McCain, but there is no comparison.
U.S. to rely on Russia for manned spaceflight - International Herald Tribune

STAR CITY, Russia: This place was once no place, a secret military base northeast of Moscow that did not show up on maps. The Soviet Union trained its astronauts here to fight on the highest battlefield of the Cold War: space.
Yet these days, Star City is the place for America's hard-won orbital partnership with Russia, where astronauts train to fly aboard Soyuz spacecraft. And in two years, according to the Bush administration's plans, Star City will be the only place for sending astronauts from any nation to the International Space Station.
European standoff over search engine data - International Herald Tribune

BERLIN: For more than a year, European data privacy officials have been battling with U.S. Internet search engines, trying to get them to conform to European restrictions on the storage of personal information gleaned from the Web.
Now, as the U.S. titans Google, Microsoft and Yahoo continue to retain personal data beyond the six-month time limit established this year by the European Commission, regulators say their patience is running thin.
