In Memoriam: Phil Clapp, Environmental Champion and Climate Leader
Posted by Shemuses
Phil Clapp, 54, deputy managing director of the Pew Environment Group, died yesterday in Amsterdam of complications from pneumonia, which he contracted while on vacation. Obituaries of this gentle, humorous man who was one of the environmental movement's most effective Washington insiders are running today in both the New York Times and the Washington Post.
A Political Earthquake: Pelosi’s Democratic House Passes Pro-Drilling Bill
Posted by Shemuses
The energy battle unfolding in the halls of Congress carries one clear lesson: energy prices and economic insecurity present a profoundly more powerful political imperative than calls for environmental protection and climate action. Rising gas prices and plummeting stock prices have dramatically altered the political landscape around energy, creating a pivotal moment for clean energy and climate advocates. Republicans successfully capitalized on the changing energy landscape to advance an expanded oil drilling agenda, pushing Democrats back with cries of "Drill Baby, Drill!" and seizing control of the energy debate for the first time since the 2006 election.
Tariq Ali, Has the U.S. Invasion of Pakistan Begun?
Posted by Shemuses from tom dispatch
As Andrew Bacevich tells us in the latest issue of the Atlantic, there's now a vigorous debate going on in the military about the nature of the "next" American wars and how to prepare for them. However, while military officers argue, that "next war" may already be creeping up on us.
Obama Is Your Trudeau, I Tell American Friends
Posted by Shemuses from The Tyee
Even though I currently reside in Northern California, where news from Canada has to be sought out on the web on sites like The Tyee, I am well aware that Harper has called an election. I voted in the last federal election (I was in Vancouver then) and I'll feel frustrated again if Canada tilts even more to the right, away from our proud liberal heritage that, to some extent, still makes us the envy of the world.
This is Your Nation on White Privilege
Posted by Shemuses
For those who still can't grasp the concept of white privilege, or who are constantly looking for some easy-to-understand examples of it, perhaps this list will help. White privilege is when you can get pregnant at seventeen like Bristol Palin and everyone is quick to insist that your life and that of your family is a personal matter, and that no one has a right to judge you or your parents, because "every family has challenges," even as black and Latino families with similar "challenges" are regularly typified as irresponsible, pathological and arbiters of social decay...
Neo-Nazi Magazine to Feature Obama Assassination Cover
Posted by theangryindian from Angryindian.blogspot
Neo-Nazi boss Bill White, long given to swaggering threats and proposals for violence, this week went even further than normal - announcing plans for a magazine cover headlined "Kill This ******?" with a photo of Barack Obama and, two days later, publishing the home address of a juror who helped convict another neo-Nazi leader in a federal conspiracy case.
Pakistani tribal chiefs threaten to join Taliban
Posted by okami from Guardian UK
If the united States continues it's present policy of 'cross-border attacks' (ie, incursions) into western Pakistan from Afghanistan, they will be facing troubles in addition to retaliation from the Pakistani army. Tribal leaders of the western area swear that they will join the Taliban if the incursions and attacks continue. These leaders claim to represent half a million Pakistanis, all of whom would go to the Taliban if the US continues this policy.
