Mr. Obama’s Neighborhood
Posted by Shemuses
Chicago's power class comes to Washington.Chicago, the town where Barack Obama arrived without knowing a soul in 1985, is suddenly the center of the political world and-if past and present trends are any indication-will continue to wield considerable influence after Obama sets up shop in the White House. If his recent interview with 60 Minutes was any clue, Obama loves Chicago and doesn't mind governing from home.
'Change' Wins in Vancouver
Posted by Shemuses from The Tyee
The party promising "change" won by a landslide in Vancouver on Saturday. Just what measure of change the voters demanded wasn't immediately apparent, however. Were they expecting Vision mayoral candidate Gregor Robertson to make good on his victory speech promises to eliminate homelessness and turn Vancouver into "the world's greenest city"?

Chávez’s Venezuela Positions Itself as a Salon for the World’s Leftist Thinkers

The Nepalese Maoist smiled as he glanced around the lobby of the Hotel Alba Caracas. To his left, West African delegates to the World Meeting of Intellectuals and Artists in Defense of Humanity chatted in French. To his right, the Egyptian author of a book on President
Hugo Chávezpuffed on a cigarette. Barack Obama and the Native Vote at Racialicious

Like millions of people all over the world, I'm ecstatic, over-the-moon inspired by Obama's win. If for no other reason (and all the others too in which we share the same opinion, like abortion for example) than his win is actually a good thing for the people in my community. Yes indeed, the new leadership of Barack Obama in the United States of America is good for Native people, and you can sure as hell bet that a whole lot of us voted for him, and are counting on him to really give a crap about the issues we are facing.
Will Obama Make the Mistake of Latin American Leaders?
Posted by Shemuses
Barack Obama's historic victory is reminiscent of recent precedent-setting Latin American elections, in which indigenous and mixed-race candidates triumphed over centuries of entrenched discrimination to achieve election wins. Those leaders took office borne on similar waves of cathartic celebration. But President-elect Obama would be well-advised to learn from his Latin American counterparts' subsequent disappointing trajectories in office if he is to avoid repeating their mistakes. Initial elation gave way to bitter disappointment and polarization, as Latin America's new leaders failed to deliver on their promises and instead contributed to divide their societies further.
