      Posted by bittenandbound

Actor Wesley Snipes has received a three-year prison sentence for three counts of willfully failing to file his taxes.

Although Snipes' attorney argued that the sentence was too stiff for a first-time offender, U.S. District Judge William Terrell Hodges disagreed, despite character reference letters from three dozen family members and friends, including Denzel Washington and Woody Harrelson.

    • Record-High Ratio of Americans in Prison

Posted by Jeff from Seattle Times

50 states spent more than $49 billion on corrections last year, up from less than $11 billion 20 years earlier. The rate of increase for prison costs was six times greater than for higher education spending, the report said. Using updated state-by-state data, the report said 2,319,258 adults were held in U.S. prisons or jails at the start of 2008 _ one out of every 99.1 adults, and more than any other country in the world.

    • Five To Fifteen Years: The Life Of An Inmate

      Posted by Orato

Last year, I stumbled upon a prisoner's blog in which the inmate expressed his desire to maintain a link with the outside world while maintaining his anonymity. I contacted Prisoner X through this blog and requested an interview. Some months later, a letter from a state department of correctional services turned up in the mailbox. Here's his story.

    Prison population on the rise

DB, great post. I think this is one of the top issues facing our society – and it’s so linked to economic opportunity.

Is the right wing more anti-tax than it is pro-punishment? There will come a tipping point where they can’t afford this…where we can’t afford this…

The privatization of the prison systems is as bad as the Haliburton-Iraq situation.

    US Prison Population Sets Record

Talk about an underclass. It’s a prison underclass. And we’re all paying for it. Seems like looking at the causes of these incarcerations – e.g. the underlying economic causes – might save us a lot of money over time.

The detailed stats here are astounding (as is the overall #). And the cost has to be huge, both in economic and social terms.
