    • Prison population on the rise

      There are more than 1.5 million inmates in the nation's state and federal prisons, a number that is projected to grow to more than 1.7 million by the end of 2011, a 13 percent increase. The nation's population, by comparison, is projected to grow by 4.5 percent in that time.

    DB, great post. I think this is one of the top issues facing our society – and it’s so linked to economic opportunity.

    Is the right wing more anti-tax than it is pro-punishment? There will come a tipping point where they can’t afford this…where we can’t afford this…

    The privatization of the prison systems is as bad as the Haliburton-Iraq situation.
