Congress's Apology for Slavery Is a Good Thing—It's Just Not Enough
Posted by Shemuses
The House of Representative's vote to apologize for the horror of slavery was an easy call. Several states have done their mea culpas on slavery. The resolutions the states and Congress passed were mild, innocuous, and ultimately toothless. In truth that's all they were supposed to be. But the House resolution was still important. It was tacit acknowledgement of something that the slavery apology opponents vehemently deny and that is that slavery was not just the evil doings of greedy Southern planters.
States Fail to Offer Voter Registration to Millions of Low-Income Voters
Posted by Shemuses from Alternet
Another big election year and once again low-income voters are on the sidelines. Millions of low-income and minority voters are being denied opportunities to register to vote by state agencies that are violating a federal voting law, according to members of Congress and voting rights groups. The ongoing failure has led to a nearly 80 percent drop-off in registering low-income applicants at state social services agencies over a decade, according to a recent report by the non-partisan voter advocacy research groups Project Vote and Demos.
Perez Hilton Hates Yellow People

Ever wonder how an internet meme gets started? Or, for that matter, how it then spreads and metastasizes until it becomes accepted fact? Over the last week, we've seen one particular meme develop about China: "China Hates Black People" (courtesy of Perez Hilton). His idea didn't, however, originate with Perez Hilton. It started last Friday with a story in Hong Kong's South China Morning Post, "Authorities order bars not to serve black people," which alleged that Chinese government authorities were secretly planning to ban blacks from bars during the Olympic games.
Black in America Misses the ‘Why’
Posted by Shemuses
The cable television program "Black in America" focused on several different socio-economic issues that affect African-Americans in today's society. Aired on CNN, host Soledad O'Brien takes the viewer on a journey through various neighborhoods; effectively shedding light on dark issues that have plagued Black America for some time. Issues such as education, marriage, pregnancy, and violence in different communities throughout the country were highlighted, giving the viewer insight into a plight that only the Black community often feels. While O'Brien did a fantastic job telling the stories of various individuals she interviewed, little emphasis was placed on the story behind the story. Not much focus was given to the "why" in these particular scenarios.

How Long Will It Take For Obama To Fail as President?
Posted by Shemuses
By now, unless something genuinely unexpected happens, I think Obama stands a better-than-even chance of winning the White House. In and of itself, that will stand as a tremendous victory, not just for Obama individually but for a whole host of other people, interest groups, et cetera. We'd all better savor that glowing feeling in November, and bask in the warm light of January 20, because it won't be long after that when people start calling Obama a "failure." Within six months, they're going to start writing a political obituary for him.
Denied kindergarten for being Native?
Posted by Shemuses from ABC Local
Five year old Adriel Arocha is being blocked from attending school in a Houston-area school district. The reason? As an Apache, he has long hair that he has been growing in his Native cultural tradition that "violates" this school's dress code rules. The parents of a kindergartener in Fort Bend County are fighting for his right to have long hair in school. They say it's about freedom of religion. The Needville Independent School District says it needs proof. When Adriel Arocha, 5, was born, his father, Kenney, vowed to teach him his heritage. "We feel that it's important to raise him as Native American until he's able to make a choice," said Kenny...
