    • African Americans are half of U.S. homicides in 2005

      According to the U.S. Census Bureau, African Americans numbered about 35 million -- just over 12 percent of the total population -- in 2005. Males made up 85 percent of all Black murder victims. Another demographic indicated that more than half (51%) of Black homicide victims were between the ages of 17 and 29.

      I have been convinced that many large public schools function like factory systems. You pop in one student and with the appropriate manipulations, the necessary conveyor belt rides and some pedagogical alchemy and you get the school product: a depoliticized consumer who is more prepared to select the next game system to buy then to think critically about the social context that shapes his financially struggling neighborhood. John Dewey alludes to it, and Paulo Freire explicitly discusses it.

      African-Americans are abandoning this famously progressive city at a rate that has alarmed San Francisco officials, who vow to stop the exodus and develop a strategy to win blacks back to the city. In June, Mayor Gavin Newsom appointed a task force to study how to reverse decades of policies — and neglect — that black leaders say have fueled the flight.

    I’m not sure if this is accurate.  Obama would hot have as much black support if he was white. Assuming he was still liberal he would still not pick up additional conservative support.

    We all got problems, many people face discrimination, the elderly, young, women, disabled, single mothers..It’s never acceptable under any circumstances….lots of people face the challenge of discrimination. No one group has a monopoly!

    One of the many tragedies of the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina three years ago was the fact that insurance companies used the event to systematically deny claims, leaving victims further in desperate straits. That shouldn’t happen following any natural disaster, and even though the immediate storm effects did not cause as much damage as predicted, there are sure to be plenty of claims for flood damages throughout the Midwest and along Gustav’s path. If you or someone you know has been denied an insurance claim related to Gustav: that would be a site you should visit.
