High-Minded Hip-Hop Any Progressive Can Enjoy

      Posted by Shemuses

When it comes to hip-hop I often feel like Chris Rock who once said, "I love rap, but I'm tired of defending it." So much of it just sounds the same or worse, it's degrading and beneath everyone involved. For those of you who the same or wouldn't normally even get near a hip-hop section of your record store, you need to give an upcoming album featuring Cornel West deserves a listen.

      Displaced In Darfur

Posted by Shemuses from Al Jazeera

It is a camp for the displaced unlike others in Darfur. It is never seen by the outside the world, never reached by a humanitarian organisation, deep in the mountains and under rebel control. They shelter under sticks and straw and forage in the woods to survive.

Us Muslim Charity Goes On Trial

Posted by Shemuses from Al Jazeera

A US-based Muslim charity organisation has gone on trial in Texas on charges of supporting terrorism. But critics are calling the trial of the once-biggest Muslim charity in the US a politically-motivated witch-hunt.

    • Karl Rove Resigns... In the Name of Racial Justice?

      Posted by Shemuses

If you haven't heard, Karl Rove, whom the NY Times had the courage to describe as President Bush's "strategist" (rather than his "chief thug" or "head goon") resigned today. While bounding through the InterWeb following the story this morning, I happened upon this unexpected gem hypothesizing about Rove's decision to leave his White House post at this particular moment. Among other more defensible reasons...

Like an unwelcome memory of youthful stupidity, the residential-schools scandal keeps coming back to haunt us. But what do we really know about how the residential schools came to be? For most of us, only that First Nations kids were stuffed into them for generations and once inside were sexually, physically and culturally abused.

    • How Do Editors Reach Out to Writers of Color?

      Posted by Shemuses

First of all, arguing that editors don't have time to do their jobs doesn't really excuse anything. It's an editor's job not merely to present the best writing that's sent to her, not merely to make a real, good faith effort to find the best writing that's out there, but to actually encourage writers to produce more and differently--to shape the kind of writing that gets made in the first place. Anyone who doesn't know this isn't really a professional in the field.

Aboriginal issues missing from election campaign: First Nations leader

This is bad.  Their issues should be discussed in the election

    Racism Without Racists

I’m not sure if this is accurate.  Obama would hot have as much black support if he was white. Assuming he was still liberal he would still not pick up additional conservative support.
