    • Mauritania: Fair Elections Haunted By Racial Imbalance

Posted by Shemuses from All Africa

Unlike the three previous elections won by former military leader Maaouya Ould Sid Ahmed Taya, this one is likely to be fair. But whether a fairer electoral process will make Mauritania a fairer society, is still far from clear. Certainly the racial make up of the political elite remains unchanged. The list of candidates is skewed in favour of light-skin Moors in a country where the majority of people are black...

    • Virginia lawmakers apologize for slavery

Posted by Shemuses from Globe and Mail

Meeting on the grounds of the former Confederate Capitol, the Virginia General Assembly voted unanimously Saturday to express “profound regret” for the state's role in slavery. Sponsors of the resolution say they know of no other state that has apologized for slavery, although Missouri lawmakers are considering such a measure. The resolution...

While top-rated U.S. network drama 24 has set tongues wagging with its portrayal of Arabs and Muslims at home and abroad as bywords for anti-American terror, a number of Canadian filmmakers, TV producers, novelists and playwrights are examining the lives of their under-attack communities with considerably more understanding and far less fear...

    • Man allegedly abducted by CIA says he was tortured in Egypt

Posted by Shemuses from Globe and Mail

His torture allegations could fuel the controversy over the first criminal case involving the CIA's extraordinary rendition program, in which U.S. authorities secretly transferred terror suspects for interrogation to third countries where critics say they faced torture. “I was subjected to the worst kind of torture in Egyptian prisons. Why Should White People Fight Racism? Take Three

Based on Thomas’ lack of intellect, he seems to be right that he was not selected based on merit. Yet, there are plenty of actually brilliant black people in our country, so he is hardly a standard case. He is living a rarified life and has more power than an unstable man should have.

Why can’t NYC companies retain employees of color?

This is why I agree with affirmative action.  Opponents say, just let business make the right decision to hire the best candidate.  Well, this is what you get when people are left to do the right thing, they intentionally or unintentionally make the wrong decision. People naturally want to be around people that look like them.  Especially businesses need help with integration, otherwise the people with the most power ethnically will continue to pass it to people that look like them. Have you ever been to an office party where everyone comes in together but the people that work together end up sitting at the same tables?  Well, the same thing occurs in all countries in all industries around the world.  Does it seem unfair to a few that do not see a level playing field when their places are taken for the sake of diversity?  Of course it does, but a few are inconvenienced for the benefit of the whole society that sees a diverse workforce which then inspires others to work hard.  The truth is that there will never be a level playing field unless it is tilted back to level to include minorities.

    The Science of Racism

Very interesting article. I suspect that some of Watson’s views are colored by the influence of his generation. It’s obvious that there is physical genetic variation among the races (well duh), but making assumptions about differences in intelligence takes quite a leap.

What good, what contribution could this statement possibly make? Nelson Mandela and Malcolm X are intellectually impaired? Really?  You are a fool my dear Watson. The variences of the human mind that contains more synapses than there are stars in our galaxy are infinite.

Indeed.  Remember William Shockley?  He based his eugenics on himself.

    The Science of Racism

Considering how my "Jewish intelligence" is still far lower than several of my friends who happen to be black, this idea seems a load of rubbish to me.

Watson cites his own IQ as proof that IQ tests are wrong, so this analysis most likely is too.
