Proposed immigration changes 'racist,' B.C. protesters say

      Posted by Shemuses from CBC

About 70 people gathered in Surrey, B.C., on Sunday to protest a controversial government bill that would give more power to the federal immigration minister to approve or deny immigration applications. Bill C-50, which will amend the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, is a "racist policy" and, if passed, will endow Citizenship and Immigration Minister Diane Finley too much arbitrary power, said Tammy Sadeghi, a spokesperson for the protesters.

Many low-income First Nations mothers feel uncomfortable using aid services outside their community, so when Aboriginal-run programs are cut it puts those women at greater risk of losing their children. Penny Irons, executive director of the Aboriginal Mother Centre Society, said government support for the marginalized group is declining while the number of children in care is consequently skyrocketing.

    • Raids a Reminder of Historical Backlash Against Immigrants

      Posted by Shemuses

I'm not "the sky is falling type" but if I were an undocumented immigrant, that's definitely how I'd feel right about now. Immigrant communities around the country are being attacked by ICE, the criminal justice system, legislators, vigilante groups, and the list goes on. Between Iowa and California alone, nearly 1,200 families have been torn apart and possibly destroyed by raids leading to detention, deportation and incarceration.

      To Protect and Serve?

The same cycle of brutality needs more than the same old reaction. It's time to cut the bush, thorns and all. Even before the car stopped, the

      police officers began swarming

out of their own cars. They snatched the three young black men out of their vehicle, threw them onto the ground in the streets of North Philadelphia, and for more than 30 seconds kicked and punched and swung billy clubs, brutalizing, torturing and dehumanizing the three young men.

    • Reports concern Muslims

Posted by Shemuses from Los Angeles Times

A report that mosques in Los Angeles and San Diego are under federal surveillance has resurrected fears in the Muslim community about government monitoring and led two civil rights groups Wednesday to call for congressional hearings. The request for public hearings followed a newspaper article last week that cited FBI and Defense Department files pertaining to surveillance of mosques and Muslims in Southern California.

    • Paying tribute to Octavia Butler

Posted by Shemuses from Los Angeles Times

Nikki Giovanni and other African American writers will honor the late novelist at the second annual Leimert Park Book Fair on Saturday. Jobs are scarce. Water is even scarcer. Pollution, racial tensions and general poverty have transformed Los Angeles into a dystopian wasteland dotted by pockets of privilege. Sounds like a page right out of 2008, except for the fact that it was written back in 1993, as the setup for Octavia E. Butler's science fiction novel "Parable of the Sower," set in 2025.

Why Should White People Fight Racism? Take Three

Based on Thomas’ lack of intellect, he seems to be right that he was not selected based on merit. Yet, there are plenty of actually brilliant black people in our country, so he is hardly a standard case. He is living a rarified life and has more power than an unstable man should have.

Why can’t NYC companies retain employees of color?

This is why I agree with affirmative action.  Opponents say, just let business make the right decision to hire the best candidate.  Well, this is what you get when people are left to do the right thing, they intentionally or unintentionally make the wrong decision. People naturally want to be around people that look like them.  Especially businesses need help with integration, otherwise the people with the most power ethnically will continue to pass it to people that look like them. Have you ever been to an office party where everyone comes in together but the people that work together end up sitting at the same tables?  Well, the same thing occurs in all countries in all industries around the world.  Does it seem unfair to a few that do not see a level playing field when their places are taken for the sake of diversity?  Of course it does, but a few are inconvenienced for the benefit of the whole society that sees a diverse workforce which then inspires others to work hard.  The truth is that there will never be a level playing field unless it is tilted back to level to include minorities.

    The Science of Racism

Very interesting article. I suspect that some of Watson’s views are colored by the influence of his generation. It’s obvious that there is physical genetic variation among the races (well duh), but making assumptions about differences in intelligence takes quite a leap.

What good, what contribution could this statement possibly make? Nelson Mandela and Malcolm X are intellectually impaired? Really?  You are a fool my dear Watson. The variences of the human mind that contains more synapses than there are stars in our galaxy are infinite.

Indeed.  Remember William Shockley?  He based his eugenics on himself.

    The Science of Racism

Considering how my "Jewish intelligence" is still far lower than several of my friends who happen to be black, this idea seems a load of rubbish to me.

Watson cites his own IQ as proof that IQ tests are wrong, so this analysis most likely is too.
