    • Blow for Haida power

Posted by Shemuses from Globe and Mail

Haida Gwaii, also known as the Queen Charlotte Islands, has long been recognized as an ecological and national treasure. Its stunning landscape and natural beauty draw visitors from around the world. Although the natural environment is a source of pride and is closely protected by its residents, close to 26,000 tonnes of greenhouse gases are spewed each year into the atmosphere there. Why? Because the island primarily relies upon diesel for its energy needs.

    • Why Canadians side with militant Indians

Posted by Shemuses from Toronto Star

And, perhaps more importantly for the Canadian government, why are so many members of the settler society – non-indigenous Canadians – adding their voices and bodies to this tide of militancy? A simple answer might be: The Canadian state is not itself following the rule of law, nor has it ever done so with regard to indigenous peoples.

    • Stop trains or natives will: chiefs

Posted by Shemuses from Globe and Mail

Canada's native chiefs will pressure the national railways to close down for the Assembly of First Nations' "day of action" on June 29, backing it up with a veiled threat they will probably face blockades from individual native bands if they refuse.

Aboriginal issues missing from election campaign: First Nations leader

This is bad.  Their issues should be discussed in the election

    Racism Without Racists

I’m not sure if this is accurate.  Obama would hot have as much black support if he was white. Assuming he was still liberal he would still not pick up additional conservative support.

    Fraud Worsens Foreclosure Crisis

One of the many tragedies of the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina three years ago was the fact that insurance companies used the event to systematically deny claims, leaving victims further in desperate straits. That shouldn’t happen following any natural disaster, and even though the immediate storm effects did not cause as much damage as predicted, there are sure to be plenty of claims for flood damages throughout the Midwest and along Gustav’s path. If you or someone you know has been denied an insurance claim related to Gustav: that would be a site you should visit.
