Why can’t NYC companies retain employees of color?

      Posted by Shemuses

New York City is one of the most ethnically diverse cities in the country, yet many companies here are still doing a poor job when it comes to diversity. In this week's issue, Crain's New York Business has a special section on diversity in the workplace, and the statistics it cites are depressing: * "In a city that is 25% black, only 2.5% of employees making over $100,000 at the 16 [advertising] agencies examined are black" * "In the securities industry, minorities make up about 22% of the workforce but are clustered in the lower ranks" * "A third of law firms in New York don't have any black or Hispanic partners"

The Moment Men’s Fashion | The New Black

      Posted by Shemuses from Themoment.blogs.nytimes

Italy is not a country that is known for its tolerance or its embrace of multi-culturalism, and yet, all of a sudden the runways in Milan are crowded with black models. (I say black and not African-American because most of them were in fact recruited from France and England.) The news of an entire "black issue" of Italian Vogue photographed by Steven Meisel is still fresh in the American press. Both Guy Trebay and our own New York Times fashion critic Cathy Horyn have gone far to bring to our attention the lack of ethnic diversity on the fashion runways, in advertising campaigns and in editorial pages of magazines.

    • Death of Pr. George's Suspect Is Ruled a Homicide

Posted by Shemuses from Washington Post

The death of a 19-year-old man who was found unresponsive yesterday in a jail cell less than 36 hours after he was charged with killing a Prince George's County police officer has been ruled a homicide, sources familiar with the investigation said today. Jail officials have said White was in solitary confinement and was last checked by a guard 15 minutes before he was found on the floor of his cell, not breathing and with no pulse. The FBI has opened a civil rights investigation into White's death, said FBI spokesman Richard J. Wolf.

Makers of Racist Obama Monkey Would Like to Transcend Racial Bias

Posted by Shemuses from New York Magazine

Photo: thesockobama.com We were happily cruising around the Internet yesterday when we stumbled upon a link on Andrew Sullivan's blog that gave us one of those moments Dave Chappelle joked about in Killin' Them Softly: "Have you ever had something happen that was so racist that you didn't even get mad? You were just like, 'Goddamn, that was racist." That's how we felt when we saw TheSockObama.com, a Website peddling an "Obama" monkey doll.

Popular Hip Hop Site Gets Hacked By Tech-Savvy Racists

      Posted by Shemuses

Hate 2.0. As of right now, hip hop website SOHH.com is down. This is all well and good, because you probably didn't want to see what was on it earlier. The site was attacked by a group of very anti-SOHH, anti-black, anti-Jew hackers, who infiltrated the forums, splashed racist and anti-semitic pictures on the homepage, and changed all headlines to things like, "Jews Did 9/11″ and "Enjoy This White Wimmenz, N*gger." The group, which gets no publicity here, tried to blame the disturbance on comedy site ebaumsworld.com. [

    • Is Riding the Bus a Ticket to Jail?

      Posted by Shemuses

In December 2007, Artemio and two of his friends were traveling by bus through Syracuse, New York on their way to their homes in Mexico. Rather than celebrating Christmas with their families, however, the three men were arrested by immigration agents at a bus station. They were then detained at a county jail before being transferred to the ICE facility in Batavia, New York, and eventually deported to Mexico. U.S. Customs and Border Protection, also known as the Border Patrol, confirms that its agents in Syracuse, Rochester and Buffalo check the citizenship status of travelers passing through by bus and train every day.

Why Should White People Fight Racism? Take Three

Based on Thomas’ lack of intellect, he seems to be right that he was not selected based on merit. Yet, there are plenty of actually brilliant black people in our country, so he is hardly a standard case. He is living a rarified life and has more power than an unstable man should have.

This is why I agree with affirmative action.  Opponents say, just let business make the right decision to hire the best candidate.  Well, this is what you get when people are left to do the right thing, they intentionally or unintentionally make the wrong decision. People naturally want to be around people that look like them.  Especially businesses need help with integration, otherwise the people with the most power ethnically will continue to pass it to people that look like them. Have you ever been to an office party where everyone comes in together but the people that work together end up sitting at the same tables?  Well, the same thing occurs in all countries in all industries around the world.  Does it seem unfair to a few that do not see a level playing field when their places are taken for the sake of diversity?  Of course it does, but a few are inconvenienced for the benefit of the whole society that sees a diverse workforce which then inspires others to work hard.  The truth is that there will never be a level playing field unless it is tilted back to level to include minorities.

    The Science of Racism

Very interesting article. I suspect that some of Watson’s views are colored by the influence of his generation. It’s obvious that there is physical genetic variation among the races (well duh), but making assumptions about differences in intelligence takes quite a leap.

What good, what contribution could this statement possibly make? Nelson Mandela and Malcolm X are intellectually impaired? Really?  You are a fool my dear Watson. The variences of the human mind that contains more synapses than there are stars in our galaxy are infinite.

Indeed.  Remember William Shockley?  He based his eugenics on himself.

    The Science of Racism

Considering how my "Jewish intelligence" is still far lower than several of my friends who happen to be black, this idea seems a load of rubbish to me.

Watson cites his own IQ as proof that IQ tests are wrong, so this analysis most likely is too.
