In Navajo country, racism rides again

      Posted by Billbar from Salon

No one wanted another 1974. Not the Navajo, and definitely not the city of Farmington, which is still living down the Navajo murders of that spring, not to mention their aftermath. But here it is, 32 years later, and the old wounds are wide open. Once again, violent, racially charged incidents between whites and Navajos in Farmington, on the eastern edge of the sprawling Navajo reservation, have outraged Indian country. Once again, a city trying to shake its nickname as "the Selma, Ala., of the Southwest" is on the defensive. And, once again, what's happening here in northern New Mexico is prompting talk of border-town racism on reservations all over the country.

    • Beyond Macaca: The Photograph That Haunts George Allen

Posted by Billbar from The Nation

Only a decade ago, as governor of Virginia, Allen personally initiated an association with the Council of Conservative Citizens (CCC), the successor organization to the segregationist White Citizens Council and among the largest white supremacist groups. Descended from the White Citizens' Councils that battled integration in the Jim Crow South, the CCC is designated a "hate group" by the Southern Poverty Law Center. In its "Statement of Principles," the CCC declares, "We also oppose all efforts to mix the races of mankind, to promote non-white races over the European-American people through so-called "affirmative action" and similar measures, to destroy or denigrate the European-American heritage, including the heritage of the Southern people, and to force the integration of the races."

Damned If You Do, Damned If You Don't

      Posted by Billbar from firedoglake

When bigots are your bread & butter, you can’t push them away, yet failure to do so makes clear that Sen. George 'macaca'Allen, R-Va., is one as well, and there’s a whole crowd that’s not going to play well with, either. Poor George. These idiots have been getting away with such nonsense for so long it really never occured to them that anyone would ever hold them to account for their dog-whistle bigotry, and if it had been up to the traditional media that might have been a correct assumption. Now Allen is dancing as fast as he can to try and escape the controversy, and it isn’t working — at least not as long as people keep hammering him on it.

    • Nebraska fights to fire trooper tied to Klan

      Posted by Billbar from CNN

Robert Henderson was not fired as a state trooper because he belonged to the Ku Klux Klan and another white supremacist group, authorities said. Instead, he was ousted because he could not uphold public trust while participating in such groups, they said.
